Unreconstructed In Bedford

I have subscribed to the Bedford paper for approximately 20 years, even while I was overseas in the military. I've read the letters to the editor with delight and sometimes discontent. This is the first time I've been compelled to write in all that time.

It appears that everything that begins with "C" is under a constant barrage of attack by the liberal left. If it's Confederate, Christian, or Conservative it must be obliterated from society. This smells of P.C. (political cowardice) to the infinite degree.

International cooperation is critical to stopping the genocide in Darfur

By John Barnhart

Last week, the International Criminal Court (ICC), the permanent war crimes tribunal located in the Netherlands, indicted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, marking the first time charges have been brought against a sitting head of state. Bashir is being charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. A total of ten charges have been filed against the Sudanese dictator and now they will be reviewed by a panel of ICC judges to determine whether an arrest warrant for Bashir will be issued. This decision is expected in the next two months.

Drill Now Act would end offshore drilling moratorium

By Congressman Virgil Goode

The main thing preventing the United States from drilling for oil and natural gas on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico is the majority leadership of the House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate.

Obama won’t hesitate to end the war

By Rick Howell

Recently, Sen. Barack Obama made some innocent remarks about his policy regarding the Iraq war in anticipation of a planned visit there. While the senator indicated that developments in the country might possibly affect his withdrawal timetable, he had certainly not changed his policy in any important way.

The McCain campaign was quick to say that Obama was suddenly seeing things their way, that he had “flip-flopped” and was not reliable on the war, foreign policy, etc., etc. But they were wrong.

What are esential services?

By John Barnhart

It always amazes me that government spends so much money on essential services that it doesn’t have money for essential services. Take sidewalks in Bedford, for example.

The school system is stretching the taxpayer's dollars

This upcoming school year the Bedford County Public School System is going to save 22,000 gallons of gas by adjusting parking locations for school buses.

That’s 22,000 gallons, some $80,000 or more worth of savings.

Further action to rein in energy speculation needed

By Congressman Virgil Goode

In recent months, we have heard about speculators being one of the things that has driven up the price of oil on the world market, resulting in higher gasoline prices in the United States. To address unbridled speculation, the House of Representatives has passed a bill called the Energy Markets Emergency Act. This bill passed 402-to-19; I voted for it.

Understanding domestic

violence

For the past seven years I have been an advocate for domestic violence services and I have been in awe of the outstanding community support given to the domestic violence services by churches, businesses, law enforcement and the people of Bedford City and Bedford County. I believe the stories of how the staff of BDVS and the community of Bedford as well as surrounding communities have helped women and their children need to be told.

What I saw in Iraq and Afghanistan

By Congressman Bob Goodlatte

Recently I was privileged to once again be a part of a congressional delegation to Iraq and Afghanistan to see firsthand the effort being made in the war on terrorism, to meet with members of the U.S. Armed Services serving in that troubled part of the world, and to ask tough questions of our military and civilian leaders about the progress being made. I returned with an even greater appreciation for the job they are doing and with optimism about our prospects for success and our ability to bring more troops home soon.

Bush, not Carter, is the worst ever

By Rick Howell

I have to say I was somewhat astonished that my colleague to the left of me here came out recently and downright rejected George W. Bush and much of his presidency.

I’m referring to Dr. John Barnhart, who of course is to the left of me only in the layout of this page. As he himself would be quick to state, he’s to the right of me in every other way.
