With thanksgiving

The reality of life is always there to teach us that in any given year, we will enjoy both blessing and hardship, triumph and defeats.
Sometimes it is easier to recount the struggles than to focus on the blessings. It can sometimes be easier to focus on the inequities of life and where life doesn’t appear to be fair. But the truth is, if we look close enough, we have blessings—many blessings—for which to give thanks. Let's take this season and use it to refocus on the blessings this life offers us.

Supporting our local businesses

Our veterans

They are our neighbors, our teachers, our friends.
They volunteer at the local food bank, coach our child’s sports team, sit beside us on Sunday morning at church.
Some are quite elderly; some still very young.
They are this nation’s veterans and they’ve served this nation with honor, with valor, with courage.

Despicable me

There’s more shenanigans going on at the governor’s office and this time it lands right at the feet of Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Many Democrats enjoyed watching former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell go up in flames for his actions while in office and then doubled down accusing Republicans of luring then state Sen. Phillip P. Puckett to resign with enticements of job offers for himself and family members.

Impact will be minimal

Those who oppose the new Voter ID law have done their best to let everyone know how destructive the new law is going to be by disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters in Virginia.
Of course, they are wrong; the impact will be minimal.

Decision delayed

District 1 school board member Richard Downey knew coming into Thursday’s vote on closing an elementary school in the Liberty attendance zone, that he would be the deciding vote.
And it wasn’t a good place to be.

Be aware: Drive smart

With temperatures coming down, it’s getting to be perfect weather for bicyclists, runners and those who just want a simple stroll to take to the streets and sidewalks.
It’s a great chance to get some exercise, but everyone needs to be safe.
September is Virginia Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month and DRIVE SMART Virginia and the Virginia Bicycling Federation have joined forces to make the roads safe for everyone who is out on them. The campaign encourages mutual respect on Virginia roadways.

The facts of life

Within the next month, the Bedford County School Board will most likely decide on which other school it will close at the end of this school year.
The board already voted to close Body Camp Elementary in the Staunton River attendance zone and either Bedford Primary or Thaxton Elementary will likely be chosen as the school to close in the Liberty zone.
    The decision won’t be easy.

Unlocking competition

By John Barnhart

Sometimes the Senate, House and even the White House can work together.
That seems to be the case in the  Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.
The Act passed unanimously through both the Senate and House recently and has been inked into law by President Obama. It’s a common-sense law that benefits the consumer and should increase competition among wireless companies.

Take responsibility

Normally this back-to-school editorial challenges parents to take responsibility for their children’s education.
They should. The more involved parents are, the more likely their children are to be successful in school.
But students must take responsibility, too. And that’s the focus of this year’s exhortation.
The time of sliding by needs to be dumped in the trash with those federally-mandated healthy lunches nobody wants to eat.
