Accident claims life of Florida teen

A car accident early Sunday morning along the Smith Mountain Lake Parkway claimed the life of a Florida teenager.

William Bradford Sowers, 19, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., died after being transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital from the single vehicle accident, according to Sgt. Robert Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police. He was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Carpentieri said the accident occurred at 2:25 a.m. on Route 626, just south of Route 713. According to the report, Sowers was driving at a high rate of speed, lost control, went off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Sowers was wearing his seat belt, Carpentieri said. He died at the hospital at 6:44 a.m.

Three other passengers were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital. Their names and conditions were not available.

Carpentieri said the accident remains under investigation.
