By Congressman Robert Hurt
In order to update the 5th District on my work in Washington and in the district, I will now be filming a monthly video address. The first such address was filmed in March and you may read it below. Please visit our YouTube page at youtube.com/reproberthurt in order to view our first monthly video address and to stay in touch with our office.
March Monthly Video Address:
“I’m Robert Hurt and today I would like to give you a brief update on what we have been working on in Congress, on behalf of the 5th District, this past month.
“Hearing your feedback and having an open channel of communication with you is very important to me. That is why I have spent countless hours across the 5th District and visiting Central and Southside Virginians in their neighborhoods and their workplaces. The concerns that I hear from the citizens from Danville to Charlottesville, and from Franklin to Brunswick guide me as I serve you here in Congress.
“In order to continue this conversation, we will now be recording a monthly video address. This will allow me to provide you with a regular update on my work in Washington and in the 5th District. If you have any questions or comments, or if you need any additional information, please visit my website at hurt.house.gov.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of the 5th District and I am grateful for the opportunity you have given me.
“As your representative I remain committed to working on your behalf in Congress to implement policies which will reduce our national debt, spur job creation, reduce gas prices, and preserve this great nation and the promise of the American Dream for our children and grandchildren.
“In order to accomplish these things, Congress must enact a budget. Not only are we required to do so by law, but, in my opinion, it is our moral obligation as well. It has been over one thousand days since the Senate has passed a budget and this is unacceptable. And while I do not agree with the approach the President has taken on his budget, I do appreciate that he has at least put a plan on the table.
“As a nation, we are facing an increasing $15 trillion dollar debt, we are borrowing 40 cents on every dollar we spend, and we are facing the fourth straight year of over trillion dollar deficits. All of this will result in our generation handing over an unsustainable debt to our children and grandchildren. This is not right.
“That is why, this past week, the House voted on a budget resolution, offered by Chairman Paul Ryan of the Budget Committee, which seeks to address this impending debt crisis.
“At its core, this plan is about putting our trust in American citizens, not in government. It is a plan to put an end to empty promises from a bankrupt government. It is a plan to restore the fundamental American promise: ensuring our children have more opportunity and inherit a stronger America than our parents gave us.
“Now more than ever, we must come together to address these great challenges our country faces, and I thank you your feedback, which allows me to better serve you.
“I look forward to seeing many of you as I get back to work in the 5th District next week.
