Could the City of Big Shoulders also be the place for the Big Bird?
Liberty High School graduate and Marshall University senior Brandon Sparrow has earned a shot at the next level.
The defensive tackle has been invited to a tryout with the Chicago Bears.
In his final season at Marshall, Sparrow had 21 unassisted tackles, while assisting on another 19.
He also recovered a pair of fumbles and had 1.5 quarterback sacks.
At Liberty High School, Sparrow was a standout in both football and basketball. On the gridiron, he received first-team All-Region III accolades as he recorded 71 tackles for the Minutemen.
He played all four years at Marshall, including his freshman season. He now stands 6'3" and weighs in at a muscular 305 pounds.
All of that heft should look good in Bear orange and black.
"He has defied the odds by graduating on time and getting a shot at the NFL," said Chris Watts, Sparrow's high school coach. "Whether he makes it with the Bears or not, he has already succeeded in securing a future for himself.
"He is a great example to all of our kids of what hard work and perseverance can do."
Indeed, it is our hope that Sparrow's hard work and perseverance are appreciated in the Windy City. Good luck to him on a well-deserved opportunity.
