Easter music at BUMC

Easter music at Bethlehem United Methodist begins Palm Sunday, April 1, when the Chancel Choir sings “Pieta.” Friday, April 6, at the 7 p.m. Community Good Friday Service, the Chancel Choir sings the Joel Raney cantata “We Remember Calvary.” Sunday, April 8, the choir sings “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today.” The program includes Carillon Bells, piano and organ. Sunday services are at 8:30 and 11 a.m. All services are open to the community. Bethlehem is located at 13586 Old Moneta Rd, across from the Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake Library. Lenten Luncheon series

The Bedford County Ministerial Association's annual Lenten Luncheon series will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22 in the fellowship hall of Main Street United Methodist Church. The services will be held each Wednesday from 12-12:55 p.m. Each service will feature a soup and sandwich luncheon followed by music and a speaker. Donations are accepted but not required. This year's theme is The Eight Questions of the Last Week. Speakers include:

March 28 – the Rev. John Salley, Bedford Presbyterian Church, "What is truth?" (John 18: 33-38)

April 4 - the Rev. David Whitehurst, Word of Life Evangelical Church, "Why have you forsaken Me?" (Mt. 27:45-46)

Good Friday services will be held Friday April 6 at Washington Street Baptist from noon-1 p.m. with no meal. The theme that day will be "Who will roll the stone away?" (Mk. 16:1-3)

Spring Swing

Bethlehem United Methodist Church will hold its 4th Annual Spring Swing charity golf tournament May 7 at noon at Westlake Country Club. Entry fee for golf is $65 and includes green fees and carts, prizes and Westlake’s backyard barbeque. Fees and forms are due April 24. Youth Revival

There will be a one night Youth Revival March 28 at 7 p.m. at The Oak Grove Baptist Church located 1849 Cifax Rd. in Forest; the Rev. Aaron D. Payne is Pastor. The Theme is "Bring Our Children to The Lord." The guest speaker will be Minister Marcus Jones (son of Pastor Wadell Jones) of the New Free Spring Baptist Church. The New Free Spring Baptist Church Gospel Choir will render the music. There will be light refreshments.

Southern gospel sing

Mentow Baptist Church, Huddleston, will have a community-wide old-fashioned/Southern gospel sing on Saturday, March 31, at 5:30 p.m., featuring The Mentow Quartet and The Steve Hackworth Family & Friends. A pancake supper will follow the program.  Everyone is invited.

Mentow is located at the intersection of Routes 43 (Leesville Road) and 628 (Mentow Drive).  The Rev. Gregory L. Soult is pastor.

Mentow is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Baptist General Association of Virginia, and the Strawberry Baptist Association.

Benefit Concert

Benefit Concert at Otterville Baptist Church, Saturday, March 31, 6 p.m. for Gilbert White who has been stricken with severe case of Gillian Barre. Gilbert is the husband of Konya Hurt White and son-in-law of Harriett and George Hurt Sr.


Gospel Sing

Evington United Methodist Church is hosting a Gospel Sing on Saturday, March 31, at 6 p.m., featuring “The Staunton River Boys.” The event will take place at the church located at the corner of Church Lane and Colonial Highway. A love offering for EUMC Outreach Missions will be taken.


Three Angels’ Chorale

Saturday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m.  The Smith Mountain Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church will be hosting the Three Angels’ Chorale. The Three Angels’ Chorale consists of young people who love to share the Gospel through music. Over the years chorale members have represented countries from all over the world: Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, the Czech republic, France, Gabon, India, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines, Romania, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.  The chorale has performed on five continents, in eleven languages, and in a variety of settings: airports, restaurants, hospitals, orphanages, schools, churches, prisons, on radio and television, in shopping malls, banks, in public evangelism, retirement centers, nursing homes, in houses of culture, universities, offices, and on the street.  One special feature that has never changed has been the personal testimonies included in nearly all our performances.

Seth Lucas is a vocal instructor and choral director with 14 years of directing experience. He is also a gifted pianist and piano teacher. Betsy Mayer has been a choral director and music educator for 24 years.

10th Anniversary Celebration

  On Sunday, April 1 Mountain View Union Church will be celebrating a special milestone. They will celebrate their 10th Anniversary with special music by Donnie Miller and the Church History will be shared along with a message for the occasion by Pastor Bob Sowder.  A covered dish meal will follow the morning worship service and all are invited to come and join in this special celebration and worship and meal. Mountain View is located on 460 West on Miller Lane just behind the Moose Lodge.  Bob Sowder is the pastor for Mountain View Union Church.


Community Easter Egg Hunt

A Community Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Sunday, April 1 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Huddleston Community Church property.   Activities for children ages Toddler - 5th grade include the Resurrection Egg Story, Easter Egg Hunt, Face Painting, Animal Balloons, Easter Craft, and refreshments.  Directions:  Rt 43 South approx. 11 miles from Bedford, just north of the intersection of Rt 43 and Crab Orchard Road. Look for the balloons.

With your health in mind

The Smith Mountain Lake Seventh-day Adventist church will be hosting a series of movies continuing through July on the first Monday of each month. The next movie scheduled is Forks over Knives on Monday, April 2, at 6 p.m. Forks over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. The Mt. Olivet Youth Department will have a bake sale on April 6 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Vista Foods.

Union United Methodist Church will hold a Easter Egg Hunt on April 7, 10 a.m. All are welcome, just need to bring a basket.


Easter Egg Hunt

Staunton Baptist Church, Huddleston, will hold a community-wide Easter Egg Hunt on April 7 at 11 a.m. Staunton Baptist Church is located at 15267 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway, Huddleston. All children birth through 5th grade and their parents are invited to this event for the entire family. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt for each age group birth through 5th grade, followed by the story of Easter, and a hot dog lunch. They start at the playground beside the chapel building. Easter Eggstravaganza

EastLake Community Church will hold its Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 7 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at its property located on Hendricks Store Road, about ¼ mile past the intersection of Hendricks Store Road and Moneta Road (Va. 122). There will be an inflatable obstacle course, moonwalk, hot dogs, kite flying, Easter Egg coloring and other activities, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt at 12:30 p.m. Ages up through 11 years old – hunt will be divided by age.



On Saturday, April 7 at 5 p.m., at New Life Baptist Church in Bedford, the Trying Gospel Tears will be in concert.

Sunrise / Easter Services

Mountain View Union Church will have Sunrise Service on April 8 at 7:30 a.m. Join for Sunrise service with message by Ronald Toms. Following the service, they will have Breakfast in the fellowship hall. Join for Sunday School at 10 a.m. and morning worship at 11 a.m.  Pastor Bob Sowder will bring  the message for morning worship.  Mountain View is located on 460 West on Miller Lane behind the Moose Lodge.

Join for a celebration of hope in the risen Lord on Easter Sunday, April 8, with Eastlake Community Church. Services at the main campus, 1118 Hendricks Store Rd., Moneta, at 8:30 a.m. and 11 am. or the Westlake Campus at the Westlake Cinema. Benefit Gospel Concert

On Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m., there will be a gospel benefit concert featuring the Lynch Station Men's Chorus. The concert will be held at Mountain View Union Church ( 460 West on Miller Lane behind Moose Lodge). All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Admission is free but a love offering will be taken for the Cancer Society. A bake sale will also be at the concert featuring homemade baked goods. Concert is being sponsored by Friends of Faith Relay Team.

Healing Service

         Mountain View Union Church will hold a  special Healing Service on Sunday, April 15 at 7 p.m.  In the community, families, churches and all around are many who are ill and suffering and need a touch from the Great Physician. Join in special anointing and laying on of hands for healing for anyone in need of healing.  Healing can be for needs of physical, emotionally, spiritually, financial. Appreciation Sunday

Sunday, April 22 will be Taylor's Mountain Appreciation Sunday at Cool Spring Presbyterian Church. Taylor's Mountain has long had a reputation as a wild, dangerous place full of moonshiners. What is not always known is that most people who live there are decent, hardworking people; people who work long hours at multiple jobs to provide for their families; people who are always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. Lighthouse FWBC to host Reed Creek Gospel Bluegrass band

The Reed Creek Bluegrass Gospel Band will be in concert on Sunday night, April 29, 6 p.m. at Lighthouse FWBC. This is a free event. An offering will be taken.
Reed Creek has been entertaining audiences in central Virginia since 1996. The group works hard to give their audience a wide variety of bluegrass favorites during every show. Whether they are playing for small gatherings at the local church, or for thousands of people gathered around a festival stage, the band's quality performance standards remain the same.
From four-part harmonies to blazing instrumentals, Reed Creek plays a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel that audiences are sure to enjoy.
