Christmas cantata

Bethlehem United Methodist Church will present a Christmas cantata, Celebrate the Season, Saturday night, December 3, at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon, December 4, at 3 p.m. Led by choir director, Robert Downey, and accompanied by pianist, Lillie McAllister, the event is free and the community is welcome to attend.

Soloists are Rose Hager and Marion Wetcher. The children’s choir will sing during one selection of the cantata.

The arranger, Joel Raney, has this to say: “Whether your Christmas program is called a cantata, a worship service, a musical, a concert, or even a show, Celebrate the Season will fit the bill. With styles ranging from traditional classical, to jazz, and everything in between, my hope is that these compositions tell the story of the birth of Christ in a fresh and exciting way. Most of them incorporate strains from traditional carols, weaving a tapestry of just enough of the familiar to warm our hearts, with enough originality to surprise our ears and lift our spirits.”

In addition to the cantata, two bell choirs will perform under direction of Carolyn Reas. The Carillons will play “Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella” and “In the Bleak Mid-Winter.” The Joy Bells will play “Carol of the Bells” and “Stille-Stille-Stille.”

Bethlehem is located at 13586 Old Moneta Road across from the Smith Mountain Lake/Moneta Library.
