Christmas activities at Bethlehem United Methodist Church

ANNUAL FAMILY CHRISTMAS PARTY – Wednesday, December 14, 6 – 8 p.m. Dinner provided. Reservations by December 11. Beginner Bells will play.

CHILDREN/YOUTH PLAY – Sunday, December 18 at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.

CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLELIGHT SERVICE – Saturday, December 24 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (Communion at 10 p.m.); nursery at 7 p.m. service.

CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE – One Service at 10:30 a.m.; No Sunday School.

Advent services at Fort Hill UMC

Fort Hill United Methodist Church will hold its annual Midweek Community Advent services on December 7, 14, and 21. Prelude begins at 11:45 a.m., service at noon, with lunch served each week immediately following the service.

This year’s schedule of speakers and music are:

December 7: Guest Minister, the Rev. Jack Hamilton, Congregational Care Minister, Fairview Christian Church. Guest musicians, Nancy VanZant, handbell soloist and the Rev. Janet Hawkins, pianist, Fort Hill United Methodist Church.

December 14: Guest Minister, the Rev. Philip M. Waltz, Fort Hill United Methodist Church. Guest musicians, Ann Key, violinist, Lynchburg College/Fort Hill United Methodist Church, Jae Kelly, organist, Court Street United Methodist Church.

December 21: Guest Minister, the Rev. George Hatmaker, Mead Memorial United Methodist Church. Guest organist, Roger Dowdy, Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center. Guest soloist, Daryl Knott, mezzo-soprano, Fort Hill United Methodist Church.

The Advent services are free and open to the public. Lunch will be served each week immediately after the service for a suggested donation of $5 per person.

Christmas cantata

Bethlehem United Methodist Church will present a Christmas cantata, Celebrate the Season, Saturday night, December 3, at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon, December 4, at 3 p.m. Led by choir director, Robert Downey, and accompanied by pianist, Lillie McAllister, the event is free and the community is welcome to attend. Soloists are Rose Hager and Marion Wetcher. The children’s choir will sing during one selection of the cantata.

In addition to the cantata, two bell choirs will perform under direction of Carolyn Reas. The Carillons will play “Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella” and “In the Bleak Mid-Winter.” The Joy Bells will play “Carol of the Bells” and “Stille-Stille-Stille.”

German Advent Service

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1000 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, will host a special German Advent Service on Sunday, December 4 at 7 p.m. This service will be conducted in German by Pastor Dennis Roberts. All German speaking persons and others interested in the German language are invited to attend. A social hour will be held after the service in the church fellowship hall, providing an opportunity to meet old friends and new people. Chorus anniversary

The Poplar Springs Baptist Church Gospel Chorus of Goode will be celebrating its 28th anniversary on the first Sunday in December, Dec. 4. beginning at 3 p.m. They will be having The New Creations Gospel Singers of Appomattox singing in concert. A guest choir will also be appearing on the program.


AWANA schedule

Sunday, December 4. Morgans Baptist Church is having its AWANA program this Sunday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for preschoolers (age 3) through eighth grade. This week's theme is Trek Bake Off.    Members of the Trek Club will bring their best baked goods to be voted on by the entire AWANA club. Those who would like to join the club, come by on Sunday or contact the church at 297-4959.


Tapestry of Light to be presented by Bedford Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and Orchestra

On Sunday, December 4 at 7 p.m., the Tapestry of Light will be presented by Bedford Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and Orchestra in its annual presentation of Abendmusik. This year’s service will be A Tapestry of Light – A Celtic Christmas Celebration. Accompanied by an instrumental Celtic consort, the choir will be singing beloved tunes of the British Isles, including Gloucestershire Wassail, The Ash Grove, Londonderry Air, Greensleeves, Scarborough Faire, and many other familiar tunes, all beautifully set to Advent and Christmas texts.

“From seasonal songs that lift the spirits to quiet carols of reflection and peace, this work is filled with the music of grace. Incorporating Scripture readings, the lighting of candles, and expressive choral writing, this beautiful work richly tells the Christmas story using familiar carols and folk songs,” a release on the event stated.

There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.


New pastor

Montvale Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. morning service, to hear its new pastor, Rodney Wilson, followed by lunch to welcome him into their church. All new and past members are welcome to come. Montvale Presbyterian Church is located at Dewey Road, Montvale.


Pastor's 4th Anniversary Service

Montvale First Baptist Church will celebrate the tenure of its pastor, the Rev. Charles E. Twine, Jr., as it observes his 4th Anniversary on Sunday, December 4. The guest speaker for the morning service, beginning at 11:30 a.m., will be the Rev. Seretha Washington, co-pastor of Claremont Baptist Church, Claremont, Virginia. The speaker for the evening service will be the pastor of Claremont Baptist Church, the Rev. Anthony Washington, who will be accompanied by his choir and praise dancer. Christmas Musical

“Let the Joy Begin!” a Christmas Musical will be presented by the Adult Choir of Colonial Baptist Church on Sunday evening, Dec. 11. Preceding the musical will be Christmas programs presented by the children beginning at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge and a nursery will be provided. The children of Suck Spring Baptist Church will present the musical, A Christmas Puzzle, on December 11 at 6 p.m. The church is located at 3887 Jopling Rd in Bedford.
