County Rec Cheese Shop trip

Bedford County Parks & Recreation will sponsor a trip to the Cheese Shop in Stuarts Draft on Thursday February 28. The group will also visit the Little Debbie Outlet and the Shenandoah Farmers Market in Mt. Crawford. Lunch will be at the Wood Grill in Harrisonburg. Cost per person is $20 which includes transportation on the Parks & Rec bus and lunch at Wood Grill. Beginning Genealogy Class

Christmas is always a good time to meet 'new' relatives. If you met some of those relatives and have no idea how they are related to you, the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library is a offering a free beginning genealogy class that will help you figure that out.  The class will begin on Saturday, February 2, and will run from 10 a..m to noon each Saturday morning for four weeks. The class will be limited to 10 people, and only to those just starting out in genealogy. Subjects to be discussed will be: Getting Started, Census Records, Local Sources, and Using the Internet. Martin Luther King Jr. Day - City offices will be closed on Monday, Jan 21. Garbage and recyling scheduled for pickup on Monday, Ja. 21 will be collected on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Memorial Day - City offices will be closed on Monday, May 27. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on Monday, May 24, will b collected on Tuesday, May 28.

Independence Day - City offices will be closed on Thursday, Jul 4. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on Thursday, July 4, will be collected o Friday, July 5.

Labor Day - City offices will be closed on Monday, September 2. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on Monday, Sept. 2, will be collected on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Veterans' Day - City offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Thanksgiving Day - City offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday Nov. 29. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on Thursday, Nov. 28 will be collected on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Garbage and recycling scheduled for pick up on friday, Nov. 29 will be collected on Monday, Dec. 2.

Bland Music Competition

The Forest Lions Club will once again host the James A. Bland Memorial Bland Music Competition on Thursday, February 21, starting at 6 p.m. at the Jefferson Forest High School Auditorium. The competition is open to high school, junior high school and home schooled students in the jurisdictional area of the Forest Lions Club. Students in other local areas not having a Lions Club may also participate. The competition includes both vocalists and instrumentalists. The Deadline for registration is February 15. SMAC Valentine’s Dance

Back by popular demand, Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) will host a Valentine’s dance featuring the big band sound of “Let’s Dance” on Saturday, February 9, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the gym at the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA, 293 Firstwatch Dr., Moneta. This dance is in a gym, so no spike heels will be allowed. In keeping with the spirit of the dance, chaperones will make sure there is no funny business on the dance floor. Practice your favorite dance moves and be ready to show them off. Feel free to bring your own beer, wine, other beverages and snacks. The YMCA does not have a kitchen, so this will not be a potluck event. Buy your tickets in advance at The General Store, Radio Shack and The Visitors Center at Bridgewater Plaza for $12 per person. Silent Art Auction

The Little Gallery has announced a Silent Art Auction to be held February 1-9. The Little Gallery will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Agape Center, a local Christian organization that helps the needy with material needs and mentoring. This year’s event features the paintings of over 25 local and regional, well known artists. This is an opportunity to purchase original art at less than retail prices. Art will be available for previewing at the Gallery and on the Web at www.thelittlegallerysml.com. Bidding will end at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9. The Little Gallery is located at Bridgewater Plaza on Smith Mountain Lake and is open throughout the year, 7 days a week.

Women's Club GameFest

The GFWC Smith Mountain Lake Women’s Club will hold their annual fund raiser GameFest on Wednesday, March 20 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. The proceeds from this event will benefit more than 20 local charities. This will be the 15th year for this great event and everyone is invited to attend and help GFWC celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Get a group together and play any type of game you wish. Popular games include bridge, canasta, mahjongg, marbles, rook, cribbage or whatever game provides you and your friends with a day of fun for a worthy cause. Tickets are $20 and include snacks, beverages and a great lunch provided by club members. There are always lots of wonderful door prizes. This year there will also be some knitted and crocheted items for sale as well as a used book table. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. with play starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m. with a break for lunch. P. Buckley Moss print raffle

The Bedford County Retired Teachers Association (BCRTA) is sponsoring a raffle of a P. Buckley Moss print, Country Memories. The print is framed with museum preservation quality. Proceeds will go to the scholarship fund of $750 for a graduating senior majoring in education. This year’s winner will be chosen from Jefferson Forest High School. Department of Veteran Services

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Salem VA Medical Center (VAMC) will hold an outreach event at the Bedford Welcome Center located at 816 Burks Road, Bedford, on the first Tuesday of every month. Classes will be monthly for 6 months beginning January 8 and ending June 4. Class time is from 10 a.m. until noon. The purpose of this event is to share information about Managing your Diabetes, Complications of Diabetes, Medication Management, Blood Pressure Management, Nutrition, and Diabetes Self Care. All Veterans, their spouses, caregivers, or members of the community who would like to learn more information about VA programs and services are

encouraged to attend. On hand to discuss VA health care services and education will be members of the Rural Health Team from the Salem VAMC. In the event of inclement weather (e.g. schools are closed due to weather/road conditions in the area), they may reschedule the event. Moneta Garden Club schedule

The Moneta Garden Club will be meeting the third Monday of each month from January-June 2013 at the Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Plan to arrive around 11:30 to allow for time to socialize and snack before the meeting begins. Non-members are welcome.

The January-June schedule of events:

January 21--General Meeting. Dan Chitwood, a certified landscape architect, will make a presentation on landscape design. He will discuss the basics of good landscape design and how he offers designs that allow the homeowner to expand upon over time.

February 18--General Meeting. Earl Morris, a member of the Virginia Bluebird Society, will provide an overview of the decline and current progress in the recovery of the bluebird.

March 6—Moneta Garden Club Fashion Show at Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Open to the public ticket will go on sale February 1.

March 18--General Meeting. De English and Pete Kauffman will discuss square foot gardening. De English and the SML Rotary Club noticed that Lake Christian Ministries needed fresh produce to give its clients. De became a local expert on square foot gardening by training herself and others to grow produce for donation.

April 15--General Meeting. Nancy Goodman, a National Garden Club accredited flower show judge, will present a design workshop.

May 4 –Moneta Garden Club plant sale at Trinity Ecumenical Parish. Open to the public. Time 9 am-noon.

May 20--General Meeting. Field Trip to Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest in Forest.

June 17—Annual Picnic and installation of officers at SML State Park.

SML Republican Women

11th annual 2013 Winter Lecture Series

The 11th annual 2013 Winter Lecture Series at Smith Mountain Lake State Park has opened. The Series is presented by the Friends of SMLSP.

• Feb. 3 - The Relocation of Cemeteries for the Smith Mountain Lake Project, Doug Cooper and Jennifer Thompson, Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library

• March 3 - Gardening for Birds Including a Pictorial Diary of the Winged Creatures that Have Come to Visit the Garden; Bill Leaning, Nature Photographer.

• April 7 - Hunter’s Raid: The Failure to Take Lynchburg, Ron Coleman, Historian.

New Art UpStairs exhibit

Art UpStairs, a gallery located in the second floor showroom of Bedford Hardware, will host an exhibit of area artists. The show features the pottery of Elizabeth Berry-Mosley, the paintings of Megan Bettez, and the butterfly art of Pat Schuler. The show will continue until January 31 at 126 S. Bridge St. in Centertown Bedford. Art UpStairs is a gallery designed to host periodic exhibits of local artists and craftsmen.  The show is open during normal business hours of Bedford Hardware, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon. SRHS to celebrate 50th anniversary

Staunton River High School, serving the community since 1963-64, will mark its 50th year since opening. A committee has been formed including past and present faculty members and students, to devise and formulate the anniversary events. The plan is to hold at least three public events in 2013-14, following a “Kickoff”celebration with the student body in the late spring (2013). All former students, past or present faculty members and any other SRHS boosters will want to be a part of this. The committee will shortly be needing people with time and interest to provide past information, assistance through volunteer and financial effort. Soon they will be serving a Facebook link—“SRHS—50 years at the River” and other media outlets. Go is an ancient Chinese strategy game that has been around for over 4000 years! The Bedford Go Club welcomes players of all ages and skill levels at weekly club meetings at Bedford Central Library. The Bedford Central Library Lego Club continues to build! Go out at 3:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month for Lego building fun. Tweens and teens ages 11 and up, they're playing XBOX games every Tuesday afternoon at the Bedford Central Library starting at 3:45 p.m. in the Young Adult room. Bedford Rifle Grays

The Bedford Rifle Grays, Sons of Confederate Veteran camp 1475 will be celebrating Lee Jackson Day on Friday, January 18 at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library.  The SCV will be on hand to answer any questions about the War Between the States and to offer advice on researching Civil War ancestors.  The train layout on the third floor will also be celebrating the conflict from 150 years ago by running 1860s Era trains. The Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park will meet Jan. 21, at 9:30 a.m. in the park Discovery Center.  This is a volunteer organization that assists the park with its educational programs and park maintenance, and provides special events for the community throughout the year.  New members and visitors are always welcome. Silver Notes practice
