A community effort raises the flag

The flag flying at the Adult Day Care Center, next to Bedford Memorial Hospital, was a community effort.

The base was built two years ago by John Naples and Josh Harrison, two masonry students at Bedford Science and Technology Center (BSTC). This was part of their classwork. Neil Rommel, the school’s masonry teacher, is always looking for real-world projects for his students. The projects have to be close enough to the school that students can get to them and still have time to do meaningful work during the alloted class time.

Bedford’s American Legion post purchased the flagpole and the flag. Nick Soukhanov, the post’s commander, said they selected a pole length keeping in mind the proximity of the hospital’s helo pad. They then selected a flag that would be the correct size for the pole.

The post also had a hand in designing the base. Dick Turpin, a retired civil engineer, did the honors.
