EMT course
There will be an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic course at Chamblissburg Rescue Squad beginning February 2. Classes will be held at Chamblissburg crew hall, located at 9960 Stewartsville Rd. This course is open to anyone 16 years of age or older and will meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 - 10 p.m. For information and to preregister, contact Michael Harper at (540) 297-5560. This is the last EMT-Basic course being conducted in this area before the curriculum changes and the course becomes longer in July 2012. Those interested do not have to be members of any emergency services organization. People who enroll in the EMT classes usually join their local rescue squad or fire department but it is not a requirement. Many students enroll simply to gain knowledge for themselves.
Free Beginning genealogy class
The Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library will be hosting a free beginning genealogy class starting Saturday, February 4. The class will be limited to 10 people, and only to those just starting out in genealogy. The classes will start at 10 a.m. and run each Saturday for four weeks. Subjects to be discussed will be: Getting Started, Census Records, Local Sources, and Using the Internet. Bower Center exhibit Black & White
Wharton Foundation’s Bower Center for the Arts is announcing the next exhibit entitled Black & White. The Call to Artists was answered by over 45 artists whose work will judged in this theme show of 2-D and 3-D pieces. The exhibition will hang from January 25 to March 17. The public is invited to an opening reception and awards presentation on Sunday, February 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Meet the artist at 305 North Bridge Street in Bedford. The black and white theme will be carried over to the reception. Those attending are urged to dress accordingly.
Blacksmith exhibit
David Tucciarone, Artist Blacksmith, is exhibiting his work at the Moneta/ Smith Mountain Lake Library January 1– February 29. His designs include useful and beautiful metal art of all kinds such as candlesticks, hooks, gates, andiron sets, and fire screens with flowing designs taken from nature. Tucciarone is the owner of a local family business, Sunrise Forge, on Wards Road near Lynchburg. He creates everything from massive gates and doors to delicate hooks and latches from metal with hand tools in his forge. Most of his original creations have elements of nature interpreted in the surface texture or in the overall design. An artist as well as a blacksmith, he is often commissioned to make unique custom designs to fit a home or businesses, or re-create a historic piece. D-Day Memorial January lectures
The National D-Day Memorial will mark the cold winter months with a series of lectures on medicine and WWII. Bringing its more popular lectures, the Memorial will present “The Medicine of War: Combat Medics and WWII” at noon on January 25. The program takes place at the Bedford Welcome Center at noon. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lunch and enjoy the lecture and discussion. Needle Arts Exhibit
Goose Creek Studio is exhibiting work members of the Seven Hill Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild during January and February. A wide variety of needle arts, including cross stitch, crewel, needlepoint and others, is included in the exhibit. The ANG meets monthly to look at members projects and share new ideas. The work will be exhibited through the end of February. Friends of Library Winter Book Sale
The Friends of the Bedford Public Library will hold its Winter Book Sale on Saturday, February 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the second floor of Bedford Central Library. Donations for this event are now being encouraged. Help support the Friends in this effort and take home some great reading material in the process. Learning to Cope with the Death of a Loved One
An offering of Bedford Hospice Care through the Journey of Hope Grief Support. Museum train exhibit
The Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library in concert with the Bedford Central Railroad Group will once again be displaying the Museum's model train exhibit. The train will run through Saturday, Jan. 28. The Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Museum will be closed on major holidays and extreme winter weather. There is no admittance fee, however donations are gratefully appreciated. The Museum will also be collecting new and gently loved stuffed animals for the Teddy Bear Brigade for Gleaning of the World.

Wives of Vietnam Veterans

Acoustic Blues and Jazz concert
The Friends of the Bedford Public Library, Inc. on Friday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. will host Barbara Martin and Mac Walter in concert. The concert, held in the Bedford Room of Bedford Central Library is open to the public, with a ticket price of $10 per person, collected at the door. Seating is limited. First Go Tournament
Go is an ancient Chinese strategy game that has been around for over 4000 years. Join the Bedford Go club on Jan. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. with play starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Bedford public library for the first Go tournament. The winner will receive a cash prize. Watch local players participate in three rounds of intense play or join the tournament yourself, and the cost is free. The tournament is open to people of all ages.
Don’t know how to play? There are great resources online to teach you how to play Go, or attend the club meeting on Jan. 20 from 4-5:45 p.m. to be taught in person. Kick It Up Book Club
