Easter Egg Hunt

Free Community Easter Egg Hunt. Mountains Festival trip

The Bedford County Parks & Recreation Department on Saturday, April 21 will travel to Camp Bethel for the Sounds of the Mountains Festival. This festival combines the magic of storytelling and bluegrass/folk music with the peace and beauty of Camp Bethel. This festival features: Michael Reno IIarrell, Bill Lepp, Wayne Henderson, Bobby Norfolk and Kim Weitkamp. Also featuring: The Wright Kids from “America’s Got Talent.” Price per person: $24. Full amount is due when reservation is made. Seats will be assigned on a first paid basis. Price includes: Roundtrip transportation on the county recreation bus and ticket into the festival. The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from the Westgate Shopping Center, Bedford. Return time is around 6:30 p.m. Registration is currently being taken for this trip and seating is limited to 18. Grow the Good Life Gardening Day

Celebrate "Grow the Good Life.” This day of seminars will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The Bedford Area Master Gardeners Association (BAMGA) is hosting this event with top-notch speakers for gardeners of all experience levels, at the Bedford Central Library. Morning session- "Piling It Higher & Deeper: Raised Beds & Composting in the Garden" by Kaye Moomaw, owner of Irvington Springs Farm in Lynchburg (http://www.irvingtonspringfarm.com ). An original play written by Cynthia “Bea” Eubanks. Meet the colorful characters of the St. Cleveland Anointed in Christ Missionary Church. Meet Pastor James Cools and his controlling wife, Jane, busy body Deacon Bro. John and his mousy wife, Stacy. The spunky mother of the church, Ma Mable, with her eccentric daughter, Treasure, and all of their mess. The play will be performed at the Little Town players Theatre in Bedford (Elk’s National Home) on March 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. And March 18 at 3 p.m. Admission at the door: $10 for adults, $8 for 6-12, 5 and under free. 'Bob Ross' painting course

The 4-H Center will once again host the “Painting with the Bob Ross Method” on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn to paint just like America’s favorite artist, Bob Ross. In just one day participants will paint their own masterpiece guided by certified instructor, Genia Wright. No artistic experience necessary and in just a few hours everyone in the class is guaranteed to produce their own 16” x 20” painting to take home to impress their family and friends. The “Bob Ross Method” works in real life just as it does on TV. The registration fee of only $50 covers all instruction, paints, an easel, canvas and work clothes. Watercolor classes

Watercolor Classes featuring local artist Rod Adams will begin April 5 at Art on Depo. Cost for the beginner and intermediate classes is $125 for four weeks—once a week for four hours each week. Opportunity to comment

As required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004 (IDEA 2004) and Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Students with Disabilities in Virginia (January 25, 2010), Bedford County Public Schools has developed its 2012-13 Annual Plan for Special Education/Part B Funding Application and the Section 619 Preschool Applications. The Plan and the division’s Special Education Policy Manual are available for public review and comment from March 12, 2012, through April 20, 2012, at Bedford County School Board Offices at 311 South Bridge Street, Bedford, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Plan will be reviewed by the Bedford County Schools’ Special Education Advisory Committee at its April 19, 2012, meeting. The Bedford County School Board will review the Plan at its March 15, 2012, meeting, and approval is anticipated at the May 3, 2012, School Board meeting. Introduction to pistol shooting

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to safely handle and fire a pistol the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center is offering a course on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. specifically designed for the shooting novice. In the recently opened Rocovich Sports Shooting Complex on the Center grounds, you’ll receive a full day’s instruction from Peter Fisette, the president of the Smith Mountain Lake Pistol Shooting Association and an NRA Certified Instructor. The course will cover the basic handling of a handgun, knowledge of basic handgun design, safety and storage and ammunition basics. Sufficient time will also be devoted to actual practice firing on the state of the art, 12,000 sq. ft. indoor range. At the conclusion of the course participants will receive an NRA Certificate of Completion which can be used to apply for a Virginia Concealed Carry permit should one be desired. Participants may bring their own handgun; however, a few guns are available to use for those not owning one. The cost of the course is only $95 which includes all instruction and practice firing. Little Town Players Auditions - The Nerd

Director Karen C. Hopkins will hold open auditions for the comedy The Nerd on Sunday, March 18 and Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Elks National Home Theatre. Roles are available for two females ages 25 - 45, three males ages 25 - 45, one young male age 8 - 12. Bunnicula: the Montvale Community Read

The Community Read returns to Montvale Library this spring with a series of planned activities. First, in conjunction with Montvale Elementary, read the book Bunnicula: a Rabbit Tale of Mystery by Deborah Howe between March 12 and April 5. Sharing guides are being developed by Meredith Dooley from Montvale Elementary School. In addition, on March 20 at Montvale Public Library, enjoy Barrels of Carrots, a master gardener program in which families will help plant carrots to be harvested later in the year. This program will be presented twice, at 3:30 and 6 p.m. Don’t miss the Bunny Bash on March 31 at 10:30 a.m. This will include a craft, live bunnies to pet and an egg hunt.

Go at the Library

Go is an ancient Chinese strategy game that has been around for over 4000 years. The Bedford Go Club welcomes players of all ages and skill levels at weekly club meetings at Bedford Central Library. Don’t know how to play? There are great resources online to teach you how to play Go, or attend a club meeting to be taught in person. AARP Driver Safety Program class

Are you 55 plus? Want to save money on your Auto Insurance? AARP Driver Safety program offers the opportunity to accomplish this. Virginia Law requires your insurance company to give a discount for completion of this class for all 55 or older. Ask agent for details. The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers included age related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road and local driving problems. You do not have to be an AARP member to take the class. Cost of the class is $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-members. Cost is to cover the cost of instruction material furnished. Free tax assistance in Bedford

Free tax assistance is being offered at the Bedford Central Library (Meeting Room). The service will run every Tuesday and Thursday through April 17, from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., except on Tuesday, March 6, when the site will be closed. The service has bed offered at the Bedford Central Library for several years. The service is open to anyone and is intended to serve those with low to moderate incomes. In most cases, the federal and state returns are filed electronically. The service is sponsored by AARP TaxAide, but you don't have to be over 50 or an AARP member to participate. Taxpayers wishing to use the service must bring a photo ID. social security cards for all individuals listed on the tax form (Taxpayers, spouse, or dependents) or Form SSA-1099 (social security benefit statement), along with all forms received from employers, social security, and financial institutions pertaining to your income or deductions. A copy of last year's sate and federal is helpful in many cases. Services are normally provided on a first come, first serve bases. Doors will close early if the number of taxpayers exceeds the capacity to complete the returns during scheduled hours.

 

Tax Aide Program at Westlake Library

The Westlake Library will be hosting an AARP Tax-Aide Site again this year. This is a program that provides Free Tax filing for taxpayers with low- and moderate-income, with special attention to those 60 and older. The Site will be open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Tax Season through April 10. The site will be staffed by members of the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club who have been trained and certified in the AARP Tax-Aide program. Tax Preparation at the 4-H Center

If you’re beginning to panic about the looming deadline of April 17, then take advantage of the expertise of Chuck Marlowe, the former Controller of ITT and a certified tax preparer and learn the ins and outs of the Federal tax laws and regulations. On February 29 from 9 a.m. to noon, in a low key, patient environment, Marlowe will guide you through the preparation of a basic tax return and answer your questions concerning individual tax related issues. Bedford County Parks and Recreation will sponsor trips to the Cheese Shop in Stuarts Draft on the following dates: Tuesday, March 27; Tuesday, April 24; Tuesday, May 22; and Tuesday, June 26. Other stops may include Miller's Bakery, the Little Debbie Outlet, Country Connections, lunch at Wood Grill in Harrisonburg, a visit to local farmers' markets and The Cheese Shop. Taubman Museum in Full Bloom

The Blue Ridge District of Garden Clubs will present A Standard Flower Show, Art In Bloom -

Imagine… April 12 from 2 – 5 p.m.; April 13 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and April 14 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Taubman Museum of Art on 110 Salem Avenue in Roanoke, VA. The section for the Flower Show is open to the public and admission is free.

 

Woman's Retreat

Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center will be hosting a Woman’s Retreat the weekend of March 23-25. Retreat activities will include class sessions for varying interests including: crafts, canning/jelly making, exercise/stretching, couponing, tool use/automotive, bread baking, nature hikes, rifle instruction, and more. Weekend events also include a gift auction and a pajama party, as well as shopping and demonstrations from local vendors. Saturday afternoon we will be having a “Swap” Party, in which participants bring unused items from home to swap for new-to-you items that other participants bring. The cost for the entire weekend which includes meals from dinner Friday through lunch on Sunday, two nights lodging, and all instruction is $95 per person. Soil and Water Conservation District scholarship

The Peaks of Otter Soil and Water Conservation District, through the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, is seeking candidates for a $1,000 nonrenewable scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to promote the education of Virginia citizens in technical fields that focus on natural resource conservation and environmental protection by giving financial support to students majoring in or showing a strong interest in these fields of study. Applicants must be full-time students who are enrolled in or who have applied to a college freshmen level curriculum. Applicants shall document a class ranking in the top 20 percent of his or her graduating class, or a 3.0 or higher Grade Point Average or appropriate equivalent of individual scholastic achievement. Blue Ridge Fiber Gathering – Stewartsville

The Blue Ridge Fiber Gathering meets at the Stewartsville Library, 45 Cascade Dr., from 1-3 p.m. Upcoming meeting dates: Saturday, April 7; Saturday, May 5. The Fresh Air team

The Fresh Air Fund’s Greater Lynchburg area committee is preparing for summer 2012 and the arrival of New York City children. To ensure that this year’s program is a success, The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking volunteer members and host families so that visiting inner-city children can enjoy new experiences and lasting friendships. Each summer, close to 4,000 New York City children, ages 6 to 18, enjoy vacations for up to two weeks with volunteer host families in suburban, rural, and small town communities across 13 Northeastern states and Canada. Local Fresh Air Fund volunteers recruit and interview host families, check references and coordinate group program activities in their communities. In 2012, The Fresh Air Fund will celebrate its 136th summer of bare feet, sandcastles and starry nights for children from New York City’s low-income communities. CASA Shoe Sale

CASA’s 13th Annual Heart and Sole Shoe Market will be held on Saturday, April 14, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Lynchburg Armory, located at 1200 Church Street in Downtown Lynchburg. A Preview Party will be held on Friday, April 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. A limited number of tickets at $25 will go on sale on March 12. Ticket holders will have an opportunity to shop early and also enjoy light refreshments and chances to win door prizes. Vendors are also invited to sell their products in the Heart and Sole Boutique. Blossom to Bottle Race

The first Blossom to Bottle 5K Race will be held April 14 at the Peaks of Otter Winery and Johnson's Orchards.. All proceeds benefit the YMCA's Oncology Wellness Program, A Path to Healing and a Bridge to Wellness. Run, jog, walk or crawl over the hills and through the blossoms, down in the valley and across the streams in the benefit race. Traverse the valley on an off-road course. There will be some bridges and streams to cross and lots of farm animals to see in their pastures. The 14th Annual GameFest held by the GFWC Smith Mountain Lake Women's Club will be held on Wednesday, April 18 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. October 10 - Lynchburg Master Gardener, Joe Pond, will present Blooms That Shine in Summer Shade at CVCC.

November 14 - The program, Gourds and Gourdies will give members the chance to bring in any gourd they have decorated and tell the other members how it was created.

December 12 - The club will Smokehouse Restaurant in Downtown Moneta. At this informal meeting they exchange Silly Santa gifts and discuss a few ideas for the new year.

Starry, Starry Nights

The National Park Service will host a free stargazing event at the Peaks of Otter area, Milepost 86 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, on Saturday, March 17. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the Peaks of Otter Amphitheater, National Park Service volunteers Martin Dileggi and Alan Pipkin will present a short PowerPoint program about Astronomy followed by telescope viewing of the stars, constellations, comets, stories of the night sky and more over at the Peaks of Otter Nature Center. A typical night of stargazing will include a planet or two, binary stars, star clusters and one of the brighter nebulae and maybe a galaxy or comet. A telescope will be provided by the Park Service volunteers for those without their own optics. The amphitheater is located just behind the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center. Remember to dress warmly. The presentation will be moved indoors to the Peaks of Otter Lodge, in the downstairs Lounge, in the event of adverse weather conditions. Outdoor star gazing afterward is subject to cancellation because of overcast or rain. Bring the following: blanket, jacket, binoculars and/or telescope, folding chair to sit in, simple star chart (copies will be provided to each participant), flashlight to read the star chart. Cover the lighted end of the flashlight with red cellophane because red light does not disrupt your night vision as much as white light does. Boating Safety courses

A free Boating Safety Course will be held March 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Altavista YMCA, 1000 Franklin Ave., Altavista. Reservations are required. 'Til Death or Distance Do Us Part' Program

On Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m., join Park Ranger Betsy Haynes for “Til’ Death or Distance Do Us Part: Women and Slavery.” During this program commemorating Women’s History Month, learn about the differences between the enslaved male and female experience. Booker T. Washington wrote about slavery in his autobiography, Up from Slavery. Washington was a slave for nine years on the Burroughs plantation in Franklin County, which is today Booker T. Washington National Monument. His autobiography shares a male perspective of slavery but what about the female perspective of slavery? Hear stories about female slaves such as Harriet Jacobs who wrote, “When they told me my new-born babe was a girl, my heart was heavier than it had ever been before. Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women.” You will ponder questions such as, “What would it feel like to be a female in the nineteenth century? How would your status, bonded or free, affect your life? If you were an enslaved woman, would you be stereotyped as a mammy or a jezebel?” Ranger Haynes will share information from Deborah Gray White’s book, Ar’n’t I a Woman: Female Slaves in the Plantation South. She will also discuss northern women, plantation mistresses and the relationships affected by the institution of slavery. The public is invited to this program. Order of the Eastern Star

Liberty Chapter No. 109, Order of the Eastern Star, will have an open installation of new officers for the 2012-2013 year, on Saturday, March 24, from 2-4 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge Hall on Longwood Avenue.  Family and friends who are non-members are welcome to attend this event.  The theme for the coming year will be "Harvest Time."

Mourning and Remembrance

The public is invited to the Wharton Foundation’s Bower Center for the Arts the first in a series of Sunday afternoon talks. This event will occur on Sunday, March 25 beginning at 3 p.m. The lecture will be free and simple refreshments will be served. This program, Mourning and Remembrance: Symbolism & Iconography used in 19th century cemeteries presented by Sergei Troubetzkoy, director of tourism for Bedford, will briefly examine the development of the rural cemetery movement, and with the manner in which the departed family members were remembered through the use of symbolism and Iconography in the design of tombstones and other monuments. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser

The Bedford Community Christmas Station will have its annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser Thursday, March 29 from 5 -7:30 p.m. at the Main Street United Methodist Church (212 East Main St., Bedford). Tickets are available at the door -- $5 for spaghetti, salad, bread, desserts and beverages. Children 4-and-under eat free. Second annual Johnathan Dillon Bluegrass Concert

Popular local musician Johnathan Dillon will be hosting his Second Annual Bluegrass Concert at Franklin County High School on March 31 from 2 until 10 p.m. This year Dillon, 17, is headlining popular recording artists Michelle Nixon and Drive, a band with which he’s been playing mandolin for the past year. Also on the bill are The Johnathan Dillon Band, The Tim Massey Band, plus Linda Lay, Sammy Shelor and Springfield Exit.  Shelor, four-time IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, recently won the $50,000 Steve Martin Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass prize. Each band will play a 45-minute set in the afternoon and come back on stage for a second—and different—set in the evening. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.  No alcohol is allowed in the FCHS auditorium or on school property. Tickets are $12 in advance (until March 17) by calling 537-3415 and $15 at the door. Children 10 and under admitted free.

 

Beginning genealogy class

If you were not able to attend last month's free beginning genealogy class at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library, it will be starting it again on Saturday, March 31. The class will be limited to 10 people, and only to those just starting out in genealogy. The classes will start at 10 a.m. and run each Saturday for four weeks. Subjects to be discussed will be: Getting Started, Census Records, Local Sources, and Using the Internet.
