D-Day Memorial’s WWII Day Camp
The National D-Day Memorial’s annual “Growing up in World War II” summer day camp is open for registration. Students can come and join the fun as they examine the important roles soldiers, sailors and airmen played in World War II. They also will discover what life was like on the home-front. Fourth through sixth grade students will enjoy rationing activities, scavenger hunts, spy missions, aircraft recognition, victory gardening, visits by veterans, hands-on activities, crafts, period games, and even rationing-era snacks. They will meet with living history re-enactors and participate in drills, marches, and more. The camp runs Wednesday, June 27 through Friday, June 29 from 8:45 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. All campers receive a camp T-shirt and souvenirs. Camp fees are $60 for the first child and $50 for each additional child. Fees include T-shirt, craft and activity materials, daily snacks, and instruction. Space is limited to 35 participants and the camp fills up quickly. Preregistration is required. Registration forms and consent forms can be downloaded from the Memorial’s Web site at www.dday.org. A $20 nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of registration. Music in the Park 2012 Schedule
May 26 Two Young Two Old; June 23 Roscoe P & Coal Train; July 28 Friday Nite Band; Aug. 25 Snow Creek Band. The Old Dominion Cloggers will perform at each event. The music begins at 8 p.m. The cost is $5 per person, children 12 and under free. The parking fee is waived. Folding chairs are suggested. Soft drinks, food, snacks and ice cream will be available. Vinton Municipal Pool open
The Vinton Municipal Pool opens June 4 for the 2012 season. The pool is available for public swimming, swim classes and private pool parties. Public swimming will take place from noon - 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and noon – 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The cost is $4 for adults (16 and up), $3 for ages 5 to 15, and free for children 4 and under (youth 11 years old and under must be accompanied by an adult). Twilight swim (6-8 p.m.) is $1 for all ages. Additionally, there is a “Summer Sizzler” – buy 10 admissions, get two free. On Wednesday nights, Vinton Wesleyan, Lynn Haven Baptist and Thrasher Methodist Church will be providing free dinners with $1 admission. Beginner and intermediate swim classes for children will be available throughout the summer. The cost is $40 for six lessons. A limited number of scholarships are available for the classes. The pool can also be booked for private parties during weekends and some weekday evenings. If you were not able to attend last month's free beginning genealogy class at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library, the Museum will be starting it again on Saturday, June 2. The class will be limited to 10 people, and only to those just starting out in genealogy. The classes will start at 10 a.m. and run each Saturday for four weeks. Subjects to be discussed will be: Getting Started, Census Records, Local Sources, and Using the Internet. Seeking vendors of handmade crafts
The Vinton Farmers’ Market is looking for good quality handmade crafts for the upcoming Craft Show on June 9, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Vendors may sell jewelry, clothing, soaps, baskets, metal, wood items, candles, sewn items, crochet and knit items, photography and more. The spaces are only $5 under the permanent canopy that has electricity and fans. Spaces are also available in the parking lot. Live music will also be available. The American Cancer Society Discovery Shop announces that The Annex is open for the season. Friends of Library Spring Book Sale
The Friends of the Bedford Public Library will hold their Spring Book Sale on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the second floor of Bedford Central Library. Donations for this event are now being encouraged. Most books range in price from 25 cents to a few dollars. The selections are diverse, plentiful and affordable. Included in the selection are current fiction and non-fiction best sellers, classics, cookbooks, children’s books, puzzles, DVD’s, romance novels, spiritual and religious titles, political commentary, self help, history, Videos, CD’s, large print books, biographies, coffee table titles and craft books. Vendors invited for 42nd Arts, Crafts, and More Extravaganza
Artisans and crafters are invited to apply for this award-winning craft show, sponsored by the Bedford Woman’s Club, on Nov. 3, 2012, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. in the Bedford Elementary School. The school is located off US 460, behind the Bedford Visitor’s Center. All crafts for this juried show must be handmade in the U.S.A. Jewelry and note card categories are filled. Acceptance is based on approval and category openings. This is one of the oldest established shows in south central Virginia and won the People’s Choice Award for best area craft show. Summer Theater at Little Town Players
Looking for summer fun & learning all rolled into one? Join at Little Town Players Summer Theatre Camp! Directors Sara Landis & Paul Rycik are back with this summer, and will teach many stage and theater techniques during their two-week camp, which will end with a performance of William Shakespeare's The Tempest! Safe Sitter course
Bedford Memorial Hospital will offer Safe Sitter courses for young teens 11 and up on June 7 - 8 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Registration deadline is May 18. The cost of the course is $60. The up-to-date curriculum provides hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques designed to prepare babysitters to act in an emergency. Babysitters also receive instruction on how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior and how to run their own babysitting business. They also learn basic first aid as well as how to perform infant and child choking rescue. They even learn CPR. To graduate from the Safe Sitter course and receive a completion card, students must pass a rigorous practical and written test that indicates their mastery of key concepts and life and safety skills.
Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre: “All-American, All-Star USO Show” trip
Celebrating veterans and this nation’s birthday, a nostalgic look at the show that played in over 60 Veterans Administration Medical Centers. Rex Stephenson and a variety of Ferrum College students completed eight nationwide USO tours that traveled by van from Boston to San Diego and from Minnesota to Tampa. Former participants of the tour will join with BRDT cast members to re-create this potpourri of music, dance, comedy skits, and a bit of audience participation. The meal and production will be in the Panther's Den. Current service personnel and veterans will receive a 25 percent discount. Come out and join us for this fun-filled "after the 4th" celebration on Friday, July 6. Cost, $34 per person. Price includes transportation on the county recreation bus, full lunch and matinee. November 14 - The program, Gourds and Gourdies will give members the chance to bring in any gourd they have decorated and tell the other members how it was created.
December 12 - The club will Smokehouse Restaurant in Downtown Moneta. At this informal meeting they exchange Silly Santa gifts and discuss a few ideas for the new year.
Some members will also be participating in the following: the Blue Ridge District Spring Meeting to be held on April 19 in Roanoke; and National Garden Week June 3-9.

On Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m., Booker T. Washington National Monument will offer an exciting program for history buffs, gardening enthusiasts, or anyone who likes to be outside and learn about historical gardens. Join park ranger Timothy Sims and Master Gardener Volunteers on a morning tour of the park’s gardens and grounds to learn more about the nature of subsistence farming, gardening, and medicinal uses in the 1850s through the food, fiber, and flowers that Booker T. Washington experienced during his childhood in slavery on the Burroughs Plantation. Visitors of all ages are invited to attend this program. The program will be conducted outside so please dress appropriately for the weather.

Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp Memorial Day ceremony
This Memorial Day weekend the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1475, Bedford, Va. and the William R. Terry United Daughters of the Confederacy would like to invite the public to a Memorial Day ceremony honoring local soldiers that served for the cause of the South. The Memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 27 at 2 p.m., at the Confederate Monument in Longwood Cemetery. The group will also be placing flags on graves on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located on Longwood Avenue. Youth Fishing Clinic
The Bedford County Youth Fishing Clinic will be held Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The free event, held for boys and girls between the ages of six and 14, will feature demonstrations, exhibits, fishing instruction and more. Other activities will include fire boats, a casting contest, fish identification knot tying, bait selection, free fishing gear, and other prizes. A free lunch will be provided. Little Gallery 25 year celebration
The Little Gallery on Smith Mountain Lake is celebrating 25 years in business. The celebration will include a special “Visions of Smith Mountain Lake” juried art show to be held through the month of June featuring many fine local and regional artists. A special reception is scheduled for June 9 to open the show with artist demonstrations by L. Diane Johnson, Charles Nivens and Connie Logan. Refreshments will be served and customers will be able to vote for their favorite painting. A drawing will be held to give away a painting and each Saturday in June will feature an artist demonstration from 1 to 3 p.m. with a drawing to be held for prizes.
