Bedford Community Christmas Station screening

It's time for the annual screening for the Bedford Community Christmas Station. All screenings will take place at the Bedford Central Library: Friday, November 4- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, November 5- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday, November 6- 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants can obtain an application in advance at the Bedford County Department of Social Services office or online at www.bedfordchristmas.com.  Applications will also be available at the screening site.  Applicants must turn in the application in person during one of the screening dates listed above.  Applicants will need to bring a photo ID as well as proof of their monthly income for all household members, and the following documents for each child in the home:  Insurance card or birth certificate, plus school documents if the child is in school.  School documents can include:  Class schedule or room assignment, progress report, report card, letter from school addressed to the parents of the student, or a school registration form. 

 

Candlelight Tours of Poplar Forest

See Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home in a whole new light on a candlelight tour in November. This is the first time tours of the octagonal house will be guided by candlelight since Poplar Forest opened to the public. Guests will learn how Jefferson and his family spent their evenings at Poplar Forest. Tours are on November 3, 10 and 17 at 5:30p.m. Tickets are $18, reservations required. Call (434)534-8120. Admission includes a matted print of Poplar Forest, available only to guests joining us for a candlelight tour. The museum shop will be open until 7 p.m. on tour nights for holiday shopping.

 

Youth Awareness Scholarship

Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and Moose International announces Youth Awareness Scholarship program which is open to all Bedford County High School students.  Scholarship prizes range from $1,000 to $12,000.  Plan on attending a meeting on November 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at Bedford Moose Lodge, Rte 460, for more information.  To register, email rsundquist@bedfordsheriff.org or call 540-586-7715.

 

Lakeside Singers fall Gospel concert

Smith Mountain Arts Council has announced the first fall concert by the ever-popular Lakeside Singers. “Gospel Music Through the Ages” will be presented on Friday, Nov.18 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, 40 Lakemount Drive (at Route 122), Moneta. This concert will present a carefully selected program of Gospel music as it has evolved over time and will include contemporary and traditional songs, Black Gospel, and Southern Gospel. Joining the Lakeside Singers will be the Ferrum College Collegiates and The Gospel Truth. Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 at the door. You may purchase them from the Westlake Radio Shack, The General Store on Scruggs Road, the SML Visitor Center at the bridge or from choir members. Little Town Players' A Christmas Story

  Remember the show your whole family gathered around the television to watch every Christmas? Little Town Players brings that show to the stage when they present A Christmas Story on November 11, 12, 18, 19 at 8 p.m. and November 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. in the Elks National Home Theatre. All Ralphie wants for Christmas is an official Red Ryder carbine-action 22-shot range BB rifle with a compass on the stock, but many obstacles stand in the way of his dream because every adult he confronts keeps telling him he'll shoot his eye out. This is a heartwarming story the entire family will enjoy. A Christmas Story is directed by Allen Thompson and stage managed by Johanna Merritt. AARP Driver Safety Program class

Are you 55 plus? Want to save money on your auto insurance? AARP Driver Safety Program offers the opportunity to accomplish this. Virginia Law requires your insurance company to give a discount for completion of this class for all 55 or older. Ask your agent for details. AARP-DSP is offering all veterans and their dependents the opportunity to attend the class at no charge during the month of November.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers included age related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road and local driving problems. You do not have to be an AARP member to take the class. Cost of class is $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-members. Cost is to cover the cost of instruction material furnished. AARP members must have their membership card at sign in to get AARP rate. Please bring check or money order made out to AARP or exact change. Remember for veterans and dependents no charge.

Free Safe Driving Course for veterans – others invited

During the month of November, all veterans, along with their family members/dependents of any age, will be able to attend an AARP Driver Safety Program at no cost.  The course, designed especially for drivers over 50 (but meaningful for younger drivers), is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 16 and Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Moneta Community Center, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.  The Community Center is located at 4860 Rucker Road (Rt. 806) off Moneta Road (lower level in rear).  Persons must attend both 4-hour sessions to complete the course. A veteran need not be an AARP member to benefit from this no-charge offer.  Also, any non-veterans, 50 or over, may attend.  There is a charge of $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.  Most insurance companies offer a discount for three years on their premium for auto insurance to those presenting the completion certificate from this course. Steps to Balanced Living with Diabetes

Virginia Cooperative Extension—Bedford will be offering Balanced Living with Diabetes for Bedford citizens on Mondays from Nov. 7 through 28, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Washington Street Baptist Church. This series consists of four consecutive weekly classes with a three-month follow-up workshop. It is open to those with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. Participants will receive hands-on experience in preparing meals that are healthy, easy to prepare and taste good as well as be able to sample recipes demonstrated. Sessions will also provide up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise, and how to understand common diabetes-related medical tests. Recipe booklets and handouts will be given to each participant along with pedometers to encourage physical activity. The cost of the program is $10 per individual or $15 for two members of the same household. Pre-registration/pre-payment is required no later than 5 p.m., Oct. 31. It’s fun to read a book to a dog! Second Saturdays, running from November 12 until May 12, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., bring your child to the Moneta/SML Library to read to a special dog trained to listen. Reading aloud can improve reading skills and confidence. Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) are certified by the National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. Come out at 3:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month for Lego building fun. There will be a supply of Legos and a theme suggestion,. The library is accepting donations of Legos .

 

Alliance to visit Germany next year

The Bedford International Alliance (BIA) is planning a 10-day trip to Germany next September, visiting locations through which the 29th Infantry Division passed during WWII.  The mission of the Alliance includes pursuit and cultivation of education with communities whose history and traditions reflect themselves in the life of greater Bedford.  In the past, the group has followed the path of the Bedford Boys by traveling to England and Normandy.  Persons may obtain details of the trip and how to join the Alliance by contacting Tom Messier at 586-3059 or etmessier@jetbroadband.com.

Harmony Hit Parade

SML Harmeneers barbershop chorus is ready to present its always popular annual show. “Harmony Hit Parade” will treat the audience to a medley of our best numbers and several performances of good old songs by our own quartets. “Bar None” the guest quartet has been thrilling audiences in the Carolinas for over a decade and we are proud to have booked them to provide this years professional barbershop interlude. Change in DCP Sign-up Period

Bedford USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) County Executive Director, Cristy Cook, announced that the dates for the 2012 DCP sign up will be different than in the past. The sign-up period will begin on January 23, 2012. The change in the sign-up period allows the county offices time to begin the sign-up for 2010 SURE program and to finalize supplemental agricultural disaster assistance programs. “Because there are no advance direct payments for the 2012 year, there is no advantage to signing up early,” said CED Cristy Cook. Bedford County producers will have until June 1, 2012, to sign their 2012 DCP contracts.

 

Scott Perry and Front Porch Swing Coffee House

Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) has announced Scott Perry and Front Porch Swing will appear in a Coffee House on Friday, November 4 at Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Route 122 and Lakemount Drive in Moneta. The Coffee House will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an open mic where singers and musicians are invited to share their talent. Autumn Color Art Show & Sale

Exhibition will run through November 28 (Monday).  The Art will be hung at the Runk & Pratt Retirement Village Center in Westlake throughout the six week period.  The display will have normal, home walls (or artist provided easels) and not special lighting. The pricing and selling will be between the Artist and the Client Buyer. Art Show & Sale Hours will be 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Sunday may be 12 – 4 p.m.

 

PTA “Reflections” Art Exhibit

Moneta Elementary students will provide a PTA “Reflections” Art Exhibit at Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake Library beginning November 1. The display will be available through January 2. The dates for a People’s Choice voting process will be announced at a later date.

 

Bedford County and Bedford City Voter's League

The Bedford County and City Association is seeking young adults to participate in its Voter's League Association. The Committee meets every second Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Washington Street Baptist Church in Bedford. Several important topics of discussion are issues and story ideas related to local government and the restoration of rights to ex-felons. Becoming a Master Gardener

The Bedford Area Master Gardeners Association is now accepting applications for its spring 2012 computer based training class. Anyone with an interest in gardening and a desire to volunteer to share their knowledge with others is encouraged to apply. Application deadline is Jan. 1, 2012, for the February 1 start date. Theatre Trip to Greensboro, NC to see the musical hit show “Groovin” on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Get your old school groove on at the Barn Dinner Theatre. Caving trip to Glade Caves in Augusta County, Va. Join us on Saturday, Nov. 19, to enjoy a full day of caving. Pull on your overalls, clip on your helmet, adjust your headlamp and down we go. The caving routes available at Glade Caves are designed for first timers to beginner skill levels. Professional instruction and caving guide services will be provided by certified instructors. “A Wohlfahrt Haus Christmas”- Dec. 15. Come join us as we travel to the Wohlfahrt Haus Theatre in Wytheville to see their Christmas show. It is the most wonderful time of the year at the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre and this show will sure to prove to be an unforgettable Christmas Celebration. Cost: $53 per person. The Bedford County Parks & Recreation Department is offering the following lunch trips for the remainder of 2011: Dec. 6 - K&W Cafeteria (breakfast). Due to the popularity of these trips, reservations are taken one month prior to the trip. Cost for transportation is $5 per person. Lunch is on your own for most trips, unless tickets have to be purchased ahead of time. Some time will be allowed after lunch for various shopping and side trips. Quilt auction

The 6th year of the annual "Rainbow of Hope" Quilt Auction will be held at Mountainview United Methodist Church, across from Forest Middle School off Rt 221 in Forest on November 5. Last year, this fundraiser for Hospice of the Hills raised over $47,000 and over $150,000 total over the last 5 years. Bedford's American Legion post will host its annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Door prizes will be awarded.

 

'Paint the Town Red' Gala

The Wharton Foundation’s Bower Center for the Arts will host its first major fundraiser

in its continuing effort to support community arts programs such as art exhibitions, concerts, music and art classes and an established scholarship program. The “Paint the Town Red” Gala will be held on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 5 beginning at 7 p.m. Bower Center’s “Paint the Town Red” Gala is about reaching out to enlist the support of the Bedford community with this fundraising event so the arts will continue to enrich the lives of both children and adults. The evening will be a fun “funky formal” that will include music in both the Bower’s concert and reception halls. The festivities include music, dancing, and a light buffet with wine, beer and cocktails. Throughout the evening there will be an art show and sale, painting demonstrations by local artists and a special presentation. Before you settle your brain for a long winter’s nap, you need to think about your garden. The next Saturdays in the Garden series lecture, “Putting Your Garden to Bed” will teach gardeners everything they need to know about winterizing their gardens. The talk is Saturday, November 5, from 2-3 p.m. in the Wing of Offices at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. Deb Straw, a Master Gardener since 2002, covers the complete landscape; from lawn care, to trees and shrubs, to perennials, to vegetable gardens. Come with your questions, as Straw caters her talk to the areas participants find to be the most helpful in their own gardening. On Tuesday evening, November 8, Dr. Douglas R. Schuch will speak to the Forest Lions Club highlighting his ‘Five Year Strategic Plan” for the Bedford County School System. In addition, the top three winners of the Forest Middle School Peace Poster Contest will be recognized with cash awards. The Peace Poster contest is an international competition for 11, 12 and 13 year old students sponsored by Lions Club International (LCI). The winning poster from Forest Middle School will be submitted to Lions District 24 E in the next round of competition and the ultimate LCI contest finalist will receive a check for $5,000 and a trip to the United Nations with two family members. This meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Elk’s Lodge, 6235 Old Mill Road in Lynchburg. A Veterans Day Ceremony at “High Ground” Vinton – Roanoke County Veterans Monument will be held on Friday, November 11 at 11 a.m. on the grounds of the Vinton War Memorial. The outdoor ceremony will include a Veterans Day Address by Major General James Archer, the National Anthem sung by Judith Cline, PhD, presentation of colors by the William Byrd High School Junior ROTC Honor Guard, patriotic music by the William Byrd Brass Quartet and prayers by the Rev.
