Fat tire fiesta

Big race at Falling Creek park

By Mike Forster

Not for the faint of heart.

This past weekend, Bedford's Falling Creek Park served as host to the ninth annual Fat Tire Frenzy bike race.

Falling Creek, considered a jewel of a recreational facility, was a pristine setting for a race that often isn't pretty.  Spills and chills abounded as over 60 racers tried to navigate the park's treacherous trail terrain.

The race serves as the third stop of the Bedford County Mountain Bike Championship Series, and it was a dilly.

The highlight was the performance of Ron Glowczynski.  If you find it difficult  to spell  Glowczynski's name, we have an alternative spelling:  R-E-C-O-R-D S-E-T-T-E-R.

Glowczynski trekked the first lap of the 8.4 mile course in 40 minutes and 38 seconds, to establish a new mark of excellence for the trail.  He was closely trailed on the first lap by Brent Williamson, who wound up drawing even with Glowczynski after two laps, passing him on the second, and taking top honors in the Expert division.

There were multiple categories, with varying distances.

The next leg in the Bedford County Mountain Bike Championship Series will be held later this month.

On Saturday, June 30, Falling Creek Park will play host to the Mountain Junkies Fat 5 Endurance Race.

If you're a mountain biking nut, this one should grab you.  The race is five hours long.  During that extended time run, competitors will try to see how many turns around the 8.4 mile course they can make.

It all starts at 8:30 a.m.  There's also free camping at the park the night before.
