Crews worked Monday to repair US 460 in Bedford

A sinkhole that appeared Sunday shut down one lane of traffic in the eastbound lane of US 460 in Bedford, just past the Wal-Mart intersection.

The sinkhole appeared around 4 p.m. Sunday, reported by a Trooper with the Virginia State Police.
Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation and the city of Bedford were on the scene late Sunday afternoon. VDOT had blocked off the lane and corrective measures began Monday.
The lane closure on US 460 remained in place throughout Monday and was expected to last most of the day Tuesday. An exact time for opening the lane was not available.
According to VDOT, the hole was caused by the separation of a storm water pipe under the roadway. The water meant for the pipe washed away the material under the lane causing the hole.  Crews worked throughout Monday filling the hole and continued the repair Tuesday.
The hole was about five feet wide and six feet deep.
Traffic backups had not been an issue, according to VDOT, which encouraged drivers to use caution when traveling through the area.
