A flash drive that was plugged into a computer at Liberty High School has led to a conviction of possession of child pornography against a Bedford man.

David Shannon Caldwell, 24, pleaded guilty in Bedford County Circuit Court on Tuesday to six counts of possessing child pornography. The charges stem from an incident in May 2007 in which a student at LHS gave a school secretary a flash drive to run off a school assignment. According to the charges, when the secretary plugged the flash drive into her computer, pornographic images appeared.

The school secretary immediately shut the computer down and notified the school's administration. The school resource officer was notified and investigators with the Blue Ridge Thunder unit of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office were called in to investigate.

Commonwealth's Attorney's Randy Krantz stated earlier this summer that the student said he didn't know the images were on the flash drive, which was tracked back to Caldwell.

Multiple images of child pornography were found during the investigation on computer equipment that belonged to Caldwell, according to Chief Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Wes Nance.

Caldwell received a four-year sentence on the convictions with all but 60 days suspended. He will have three years of probation and is not to have access to the Internet.
