A former New London Academy cafeteria employee faces an embezzlement charge in connection with money taken from the school nutrition fund.
Barbara Allen Wilson, 51, of Goode, faces one charge for taking in excess of $200 from the school during the time period Aug. 25, 2007, to March 31, 2008.
Wilson was arrested in May on the charge. The charge alleges that she failed to make deposits in excess of $6,000 between February and March of this year. In all, those account for some 17 deposits that she allegedly failed to make on behalf of the school, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney John Wheelock.
Wheelock said New London Academy principal Andy Greenough and the school system's supervisor of school nutrition initially reported that some deposits weren't being made. Deposits from the cafeteria were normally made on a daily basis. Wheelock said it is estimated the deposits allegedly not made ranged from $200 to $600.
According to Ryan Edwards, public relations coordinator with Bedford County Public Schools, Wilson was initially suspended from the school system after the incident came to light. "A very short time later her employment was terminated," Edwards said.
He declined any additional comments on the case.
Wilson is scheduled for a court appearance on July 1 for an attorney advisement.
