Heritage trounces River

The Heritage Pioneers have a proud football lineage, although they are experiencing a down year.

The Staunton River Golden Eagles don’t have nearly the pedigree of their Lynchburg-based counterparts. On top of that, the Eagles are suffering through a dismal season.

For Staunton River, things took a turn for the worse as Heritage piled on the points in the second half, turning a 14-3 intermission score into a 40-3 rout.

The game’s opening seemed to point to a wild one.

After Heritage put up its first touchdown of the evening, River countered with what appeared to be a 37-yard field goal by proficient kicker Stephen Hardy.

Nothing doing. The zebras nullified the kick, stating that they had blown the play dead due to Heritage being off-sides.

Hardy booted again, this time from 32 yards. Again, he got to celebrate with his mates.

In retrospect, it might have been good that the refs forced him to kick twice. As things would play out, that was all the points that the Eagles would get for the game.
