The resignation of two members of the Bedford County School Board this year means that there will be special elections to fill those unexpired terms in November.
Dr. John Hicks was appointed to fill the District 3 school board seat vacated by Brad Whorley. Dr. Hicks has qualified to be on the November ballot. He is running unopposed.
Dr. Hicks worked most of his career in Bedford County Public Schools. He started in 1970 teaching elementary school in Bedford County. During his last two years, before retiring in 2001, he was principal of Bedford Elementary School.
After retiring, he’s continued to be involved in schools. He served as an interim assistant high school principal at Liberty High School and in Amherst County. He also worked two years as transportation director in Amherst County.
His appointment in April landed him on the school board in time to get in the middle of the process of developing the school division’s budget for the coming school year.
