Katherine W. Carper, 99, Huntington, WV

    Katherine “Kitty” Wheat Carper, 99, of Huntington, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Woodlands Retirement Community.  Kitty was born Oct. 3, 1909, in Bedford County, Virginia a daughter of the late Otis Pierce and Katie Bascom Ware Wheat. 

    She received her A.B. Degree from Marshall University and attended Duke University.  She taught at Payton Elementary for many years and also taught school in Glenwood in a one room school house now located on the Marshall University Campus. A member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church and Mrs. Locke’s Sunday School Class, National Retired Teachers Association, Cabell County Retired Teachers Association and was active with the Huntington City Mission Auxiliary. 

    She was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Lynn Carper and two sisters, Louise Brooks and Martha Fulcher. 

    She is survived by a niece, Virginia Hodge and her husband Houston of Huntington; a nephew, Dr. Thomas O. Fulcher and his wife Gladys of Statesville, N.C.; three great nieces, Melanie Fulcher of North Berwick, Maine, Andrea Fulcher of Benson, N.C., Sheri Anderson (Albert) of Hurricane. W.Va.;  two great nephews, Tommy Fulcher (Elizabeth) of South Shore, N.C., Gregory Hodge (Holly) of Lexington, Ky.;  Great Great nieces and nephews, Shane Patrick Elwell (Yuliya) of Denver, Col., Matthew Anderson of Hurricane, W.Va., Parker and Landon Hodge of Lexington, Ky. and Katherine Elizabeth Anderson of Hurricane. 

    Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary by the Rev. John W. Lipphardt.  Interment followed in Woodmere Memorial Park. 

    The family extends their heart felt appreciation to Don Faherty and Gerry Bryant and all the staff of the Woodlands for their wonderful care and concern.
