Thanks to Rick Howell
Rick Howell you are a gem in this sea of far right conservatism and religious fundamentalism. You keep a finger in the dike of truthfulness while all around you Republican (R) falsehoods abound.
The rise of mass R propaganda has contributed significantly to the debasement of political debate. The manipulation of powerful myths and images play on subconscious fears and desires and lead many to embrace their own subjugation and even actions against their own self interests. The R mass psychology is intended to appeal to emotion rather than reason. This is particularly apparent with the barely disguised racial bigotry directed towards Obama.
Your more complex liberal messages require a more reasoned effort to comprehend. The simplistic non-complex R message is easily promoted in 30 second sound bytes. This is best illustrated by the conservative gab fests like Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly and others. These diatribes would be laughable in their simplistic content except that they are effective. Think what that says about their audience and its impact on serious political discussion. The moral aspect of truth in public discourse is gone. Sloganeering has taken the place of intelligent discussion. Consider typical Bushisms: “You are either with us or against us”; “The War to end all wars”; or “The war to make the world safe for Democracy.”
Even worse are books like Frank Luntz”s War of Words that guides conservative dialogue to purposely mislead the public discussion of issues. It’s death taxes—not estate taxes. It’s class warfare—not tax fairness. It’s fair tax—not flat tax. It’s “fair and balanced” from FOX news, the most biased of all.
So our political discussions are based not on substantive factual data, but on sound bytes intended to mislead. Those busy with “making a living” have little time for political discourse and are particularly susceptible. Conservatives count on this. It’s effective, but disingenuous. So Rick keep up your valiant efforts to educate against the likes of Limbaugh the intellectual guru of Republicans.
Have a good year.
Red Cross Gives Thanks
As the end of 2011 draws near, the Historic Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross would like to take the opportunity to thank our financial supporters, donors, and dedicated volunteers who make it possible for us to extend the Red Cross compassion and hope to those in need. Thanks to all of you, the Red Cross in our area is ready to respond in times of emergency.
During this past year, through the Red Cross network, a school in Lynchburg was able to support families devastated by the earthquake in Japan, aid a woman whose husband was serving in Iraq by removing a tree limb that fell on her home during high winds, keep a family of four safe and warm after a fire destroyed their home in the middle of the night, and recruit fifteen locally trained disaster action team volunteers to join the disaster response effort in Richmond during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
Thank you for your continuous support of the American Red Cross. You make it possible for us to always be there – down the street, across the country, and around the world.
Wishing all of you a safe and happy holiday season.
