Ask important questions now
The Bedford County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors are mandated to have zoning ordinances. Now is the time land owners must ask important questions of County staff, Commission members and Supervisors as to exactly how their land will be affected by the newly proposed ordinance.
Land owners need to review the proposed ordinance and know which of the zones overlays their property because that determines how they, or their heirs, will be allowed to use the property. They also should consider possible future circumstances that may affect their financial needs and the potential negative financial impact the restrictions could place on their rights as property owners.
Most of the county is in the agricultural districts. About 1/8 of the county appears to be in planned residential districts where cluster housing is either mandatory or ‘strongly encouraged’ thus leaving defined “open public space” for scenic views, etc.
My concerns are once the acreage is placed in a zoning district, thereafter it can only be subdivided as stated by the ordinance not unlike it is now but in a much more restrictive way. The restrictions of the ordinance impacts the potential future financial gain to the land owner. Specific details of the property like streams, utility lines, and road frontage, all impact how the property can be developed and generally decreases the density...the number of lots permitted....thus the potential value of the property.
I attended the first public work session on this ordinance Tuesday Nov. 24: others in attendance (15 total) were mostly conservationist. The opinions of all citizens for this ordinance is imperative and your input at this stage is requested by county planners. You need to know now how your property is affected by these changes.
Many have inherited their property and others have, over the years, added parcel to parcel but regardless of how the land was acquired, it is your responsibility to protect your rights regarding the property and its use and/or development.
You have heard it said before “your government is here to help you.” I suggest you determine for yourself how much you and your family will be helped by the proposed ordinance. It is wise to be involved at this stage rather than after the fact.

Remember those who are hungry
As we enter the holiday season, let’s keep in mind that there are people in our community who are hungry.
To help with this, the Girl Scout organization “Bugs” held a food drive in November, going house to house on Bedford Avenue and Westview Avenue. It was a huge success and we’d like to send our sincerest thanks to those who contributed because every bit helps. We ended up having to carry some bags so that our wagon wouldn’t tip over, thanks to the huge amount of caring people in Bedford.
Again a heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed!

A lone voice
Sometimes there are lone voices in the wilderness which, if listened to, would have spared us enormous misery. A recent Washington Post article contained one such story. While complex, an oversimplified version follows:
In 1998, Born, head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, met with Fed Chairman Greenspan, Treasury Secretary Rubin and SEC Chairman Levitt. Born wanted to shine a light into the dark of exotic new financial instruments. Derivatives were increasingly becoming a significant factor in financial markets and Born wanted to regulate them. Greenspan, who never saw a regulation he liked, was horrified. Rubin and Leavitt were both opposed. But Born was nothing if not persistent. The economic brain trust not only won the argument, it also cut off the larger debate. Voluntary oversight carried the day and even that was anathema to Wall Street.
But, Born was a fighter and the Commission issued a “concept release” soliciting public comment on derivatives and their risks. Within hours, Greenspan, Rubin and Levitt went ballistic and expressed their “grave concern.” Wall Street howled.
In the meantime, Libertarian Greenspan, a devotee of Ayn Rand—rob from the poor and give to the rich—was continuing his legendary examination of enormous piles of economic statistical data in order to tease out insights on how to manage the U. S. economy. Today we know that he missed all of the insights then available from the newer field of behavioral economics; i.e., how people—CEO’s, investors and the publics—react and make decisions in the real economic world. Born continued the fight with Congressional oversight committees for regulation but to no avail. Born left government in 1999.
Why do I relate this story: First, Greenspan has extensive knowledge of economic statistics, but missed their meaning because he didn’t adequately understand behavioral economics—particularly the role of greed. Second, the signs of our coming misery were available to regulators, but the “free marketers” were so confident of their ideology that the gathering evidence couldn’t penetrate their radar screens. Third, and it does my heart good to tell you that Born was a woman, even though that is really irrelevant. If we had listened to the lady trying to convince her “oh so sure” male counterparts, we might, just might, have escaped our current misery.
Rolling Thunder, Inc. Virginia Chapter 4 would like to extend a big thank you to the people of Bedford and its surrounding areas. Our annual drive for donations for Christmas gift bags for the veterans at the Salem VA Medical Center was Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Bedford Wal-Mart. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the people that stopped to talk to us and make donations to such a great cause.
Bedford has always supported our chapter, from allowing us to have our annual ride to the D-Day Memorial, supporting our donation drives, and inviting us to be in their Christmas parade. Words cannot express our appreciation for the community that helps us help our veterans.
Our chapter plans to take a trip to the Salem VA Medical Center on Dec. 3 to serve Christmas dinner and give gift bags containing personal hygiene items to the veterans that reside at the hospital. Because of your donations, the veterans will have a good party.

Public school education in America was a first in the world established by the founding fathers.
Instruction included the censures of the law and the denunciations of religion against immorality and crime to ensure property, life and the peace of society. That cornerstone for public school instruction was to prevail into today’s schools. I consider myself as a recipient of our founding fathers wisdom.
I started public school in New York City in 1936. A value learned was, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It prevailed through elementary school and high school in which our school had 500 students. In my 12 years, there was no misbehavior of any kind. Why? Right and wrong could be different in a hundred homes, but at public school the student next to you had the same rights as you.
Before air conditioning for homes, expandable screens were put on the sill of the ground floor windows for air. In my 19 years in the city, no home was ever entered. On Jamaica Avenue there were stores for miles. Shoppers parked along the curb and left the car open with keys in the ignition. No car was ever taken.
Question, do public schools today instruct the denunciations of religion and censures of the law against immorality and crime? No? Then when the TV shows a person arrested for injury to another citizen, would it be entirely his fault? If the accused did not receive enough structure of right and wrong at home and his public schools did not instruct against immorality and crime as first established necessary to make good citizens, would the Supreme Court of the U.S. be legally out of order with their decision to remove the Ten Commandments out of the Kentucky public schools?
The “shall nots” of the Commandments are necessary to promote justice. Would the Supreme Court be found to have committed a decision of miscarriage of justice?

President-elect Obama was born of a Muslim father (making him Muslim by the Islamic perspective) and lived at least half his childhood as a Muslim. As far as we know, all his father’s side of the family are Muslims.
That reminds us of two important things. First, of the one billion Muslims in the world, most are not involved in terrorism. However, a significant number call themselves enemies of the U.S. But the second thing is more important. God commands us to love Muslims and be a blessing to them. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 19:25 that God desires to bless Syria and Egypt along with Israel.
With the massive immigration into Europe and Canada of Muslim peoples with high birth rates, the demographics of countries is changing. The Sunday Times of London (September 14, 2008) reports that Islamic law has been officially adopted in Britain with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases. Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4749183.ece)
Canada is now considering introducing Islamic law alongside of their civil law which is based on the European tradition. Some are trying to reconcile two systems of law that are incompatible. (http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2008/05/29/...). It will soon be coming to the U.S. Remember that the Taliban took over Afghanistan in stages.
We must be vigilant against terrorism but at the same time loving toward Muslims. It is a big challenge but we won’t win Muslim hearts to our culture and worldview by bashing them. They are trapped in an ancient belief system and they need light to lead them out. Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs
I don’t know all the reasons that the Atheistic Liberal News and Entertainment Industry hates President Bush, but even members of the ALNEI admit they were biased against President Bush.
I believe the ALNEI hates President Bush because of the following.
There is a cultural war in America between Christians and Atheists. This war is being fought on the battlefield of politics. The battles are in the voting booth. The prize in the cultural war is the hearts, minds and souls of the children. The Atheistic liberal news media greatly influences both domestic and foreign policy by constantly reporting only bad news about Christians, Conservatives and Republicans and only good news about atheists, liberals and democrats. The agenda of the Atheistic liberal news media is to promote extreme environmentalism, socialism, feminism, pornography, abortion, homosexuality and the Atheistic Lifestyle by having democrats in control of government.
But did the ALNEI kill the goose that lays the golden eggs in order to get democrats elected?
The economic situation started when Bernieke raised interest to prevent inflation. Unfortunately, this caused interest rates on adjustable rate mortgages to go up and the sub-prime loans began to default. That brought down the whole house of cards that had come into existence by the Community Reinvestment Act legislation enacted by the Democrats that forced the banks to make the sub-prime loans.
The ALNEI used the economic situation to justify change and were constantly proving change was needed because of the worsening economy. Did the ALNEI and Democrats drive the economy into a depression when it could have been a mild recession? We will never know.
I believe the ALNEI and Democrats thought they could produce a magic bullet that would turn the economy around instantaneously after the Democrats were elected. Now that we will find out.
If the economy is not easily fixed, the Democrats will be voted out of office, but what should be done to the Atheistic Liberal News and Entertainment Industry that aided the Democrats by biased news coverage?
