In the Classified Advertising section of today’s paper, readers will find an ad announcing that Bedford Hardware is for sale. In light of the recent situations at two other landmark businesses, Murray-Bolling Chevrolet and the Olde Liberty Station Restaurant, we felt it fitting to offer a brief explanation to our customers and friends in the Bedford area regarding our decision.
For nearly 10 years we’ve worked at learning the retail hardware business. Unfortunately, with the distraction of also operating our property development and management business, Proprietors Group of Bedford, we’ve not been able make our store sufficiently successful to justify the continuing commitment of time and energy required.
The decision has been among the hardest we’ve ever had to make, and is not one made in haste. In fact, some time ago we began marketing the store through Internet business-for-sale sites, and recently hired a Roanoke business broker to seek potential buyers, generally from out of this area. Sadly, there has been little serious interest, with the past year’s economic conditions contributing significantly.
Therefore, in large part due to our store manager (and son) Jonathan’s strong urging, we decided to let our local friends know that Bedford Hardware is for sale. We’d all love to know that our Centertown landmark business was going to continue to operate and be run by one of our neighbors.
Certainly, the most rewarding part of our near decade at Bedford Hardware has been sharing the experience with the loyal customers, both old and new, and the truly dedicated and helpful staff. It is our fervent hope that in the near future we’ll be on the other side of the cash register as loyal customers ourselves.

Issue of taxes
In the September 16 issue, Mr. McLoughlin wrote to complain that the Board of Supervisors is “backward and out of touch” and that higher taxes are needed to ensure a better school system. I am not writing to rebut the need for higher taxes. Perhaps this is true. However, I do take issue with the haughty tone of the letter. As a Bedford County native, it is a tone of which I am very familiar with and quite weary of.
Over the years, I have encountered many transplants to the area that have moved here for some reason or other yet insist on bringing with them an air of superiority and are insistent on enlightening their southern counterparts on their backward and naïve ways. I think it is wonderful for people from other areas of the country to move here with their culture, ideas and tax revenue but please spare us the commentary.
The issue of taxes is political with both sides having their fair share of ideologues. It is an issue of big government versus small government. These are political ideologies and have nothing to do with how in-touch someone is. How to fund our schools and other public services requires serious discussion. Let’s not resort to name-calling.
This summer, 52 New York City children found out once again just how special summer is in the Greater Lynchburg area. Fresh Air Fund hosts, volunteers and local supporters dedicated their time and efforts to help these inner-city youngsters experience simple summertime pleasures in your community.
None of this would be possible without Barbara Austin, your local Fresh Air Fund volunteer leader, who works throughout the year to make sure host families and children have the opportunity to enjoy memorable summertime experiences together. I invite you to join Barbara and the local Fresh Air Fund committee to help spread the word about the wonderful opportunity of hosting next summer.
The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to over 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. For more information on how you can help to continue this wonderful tradition of volunteering, please call Barbara Austin at 434-929-7405 or visit www.freshair.org (where you can also check out photos from 2009!).
The Bedford City/County Democratic Committees support President Obama’s plan for Health Care Reform, a plan that we believe, is carefully crafted and will bring about positive changes for all Americans. We ask that all citizens of Bedford take the time to examine his plan carefully and thoughtfully.
The President’s Plan for Health Care Reform:
“It will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance.
It will provide insurance to those who don’t. And it will lower the cost of health care
for our families, our businesses, and our government.” – President Barack Obama
If you have health insurance, the President’s plan:
* Ends discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions.
* Limits premium discrimination based on gender and age.
* Prevents insurance companies from dropping coverage when people are sick and
need it most.
* Caps out-of-pocket expenses so people don’t go broke when they get sick.
* Eliminates extra charges for preventive care like mammograms, flu shots and
diabetes tests to improve health and save money.
* Protects Medicare for seniors.
* Eliminates the “donut-hole” gap in coverage for prescription drugs.
If you don’t have insurance, the President’s plan:
* Creates a new insurance marketplace — the Exchange — that allows people without insurance and small businesses to compare plans and buy insurance at competitive prices.
* Provides new tax credits to help people buy insurance.
* Provides small businesses tax credits and affordable options for covering employees.
* Offers a public health insurance option to provide the uninsured and those who can’t find affordable coverage with a real choice.
* Immediately offers new, low-cost coverage through a national “high risk” pool to protect people with preexisting conditions from financial ruin until the new Exchange is created.
For all Americans, the President’s plan:
* Won’t add a dime to the deficit and is paid for upfront.
* Requires additional cuts if savings are not realized.
* Implements a number of delivery system reforms that begin to rein in health care costs and align incentives for hospitals, physicians, and others to improve quality.
* Creates an independent commission of doctors and medical experts to identify waste, fraud and abuse in the health care system.
* Orders immediate medical malpractice reform projects that could help doctors focus on putting their patients first, not on practicing defensive medicine.
• Requires large employers to cover their employees and individuals who can afford it to buy insurance so everyone shares in the responsibility of reform.

Congressman Tom Perriello – Pelosi’s Puppet
In a 240-179 roll call vote, the House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 15, passed a resolution of disapproval against Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., for Wilson's "You lie!" shout during President Barack Obama's health care address to a joint session of Congress. Not surprisingly, Congressman Tom Perriello, D-VA, of the Fifth District voted for the Resolution.
We applaud the courage of Rep. Wilson for challenging President Obama on the issue of illegal aliens being covered under the health care take-over proposals being considered by Congress. In fact, the rush to reprimand Congressman Wilson seems more about diverting attention from the truth of his challenge than it is about protecting the so-called dignity of the House. That’s because the President and the Democrats in the House are at best disingenuous when they claim that illegal aliens will not be covered under their health care reform proposals.
While it is true that the Democrats' health care plans do not provide for coverage of illegal immigrants, they also do not include verification mechanisms for determining legal status. This clearly leaves open the door for illegal immigrants to obtain coverage on taxpayer dollars. Efforts by Republicans to include explicit provisions that would insure illegal aliens would not be eligible were voted down by the Democrats in committee.
The good news is that because of Rep. Wilson’s outburst, the Senate Finance Committee and the White House have begun considering verification mechanisms and other stricter measures to make sure illegal aliens are not covered under their proposals. This in itself proves that Rep. Wilson was right.
We also applaud Congressman Wilson for apologizing to the President for his outburst and for his written apology. While we thank Rep. Wilson for his courage, we agree with him that the venue was inappropriate.
That said, we are embarrassed that Nancy Pelosi and Tom Perriello voted to reprimand Rep. Wilson rather than accept his apology. It seems to us that the House of Representatives should have more important things to do than seek to punish one of its members for a breech of decorum he already apologized for.
It seems to us that if Nancy Pelosi and Tom Perriello really wanted to put their Democrat-controlled House in order, they would begin seriously investigating why Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY failed to disclose at least $650,000 — and possibly millions of dollars — in assets on required congressional forms. Or they would check into whether Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-IL, tried to buy President Barack Obama's former Senate seat. Or perhaps they would be looking into how it is that Democratic Reps. John Murtha of PA, Pete Visclosky of IN, and Jim Moran of VA, all received significant campaign donations from lobbyists from a defunct firm, PMA, and its clients which got large sums of money for pet projects.
The 5th District’s "Reasonable Response" is comprised of a group of concerned citizens dedicated to exposing Congressman Tom Perriello for what he is – a mouthpiece for Nancy Pelosi. The "Reasonable Response" is deeply concerned for the direction the country is heading and believes that Congressman Perriello does not represent the views of the majority of the citizens of the 5th District.
