Local building owners receive assistance

-A A +A

Three of Bedford’s downtown building owners will be receiving special professional design services from Frazier Associates of Staunton, as part of the Design Assistance program offered by Virginia Main Street.

The three local property owners, who were attendees at the April 22 Property Owners’ meeting, made application through Bedford Main Street, Inc. and were recipients of the free design assistance.
Virginia Main Street has been working with Frazier Associates since the mid-1980s, and Bedford has benefited from assistance a number of times in the past.  In fact, a large  number  of  buildings in Centertown have received façade grants over the past 25 years.
Main Street also works with the Bedford Historical Society to offer a small local façade grant in addition to the more extensive professional services of Frazier Associates.
Carter Green, a senior architect with Frazier Associates, was the staff architect who came to Bedford on July 9 to begin the feasibility study process.  Analysis includes code enforcement review as well as advice and drawings of the projected outcome.
The recipients of these services include Arthurs Business Service, for 107 South Bridge Street, the Bedford Elks Lodge, for 134 -136 West Main Street, and Proprietors Group of Bedford for 110 North Bridge Street.  Each of the owners was present to meet with Green and discuss plans and ideas for the individual buildings.
Bedford Main Street, Inc. reminds others that these services are available.  One of the hoped for outcomes is the creation of second story residential space in a number of these historic building.  In addition, if there is a possibility of historic tax credits Main Street would provide information on how to take advantage of those credits.
