Mitchell Loyd “Big Country” Simmons, 17, of Chamblissburg, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008.
He was a senior at Staunton River High School, was on the baseball team and a member of the F.F.A. He was a member of the Grace Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are his parents, Loyd and Veronica Simmons, brother, Cpl. Robert Wayne Simmons and wife Rachel Simmons of NC, sister, Della G. Simmons, brother, Thomas Guy “Tommy” Simmons of the home, great grandmother, Dorothy J. McDonald of Roanoke, grandpa and grandmother, W.L. and Kyma Simmons of Goodview, poppy and grandma, Billy and Dee Mitchell of Craig County, aunts and uncles, Sandra and Gene Russell, Wanda and Percy Edwards, all of NC, Karen and Stacey Bowers of Chamblissburg, Paula and David Linkenhoker of Craig County, Billy and Crystal Mitchell of Salem, cousins, Kara and Scott Bowers, Crystal Stewart, David Edwards and his wife Brandy, Matthew Russell, Josh Mitchell, Dorothy Mitchell, Joe Joe Linkenhoker, Gracie and Ava Mitchell, also numerous great aunts, great uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at the Shenandoah Baptist Church, 6520 Williamson Rd. NW Roanoke, VA 24019 with Pastor Greg Rogers and Pastor Dustin Rogers officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Grace Memorial Baptist Church 1737 Robertson Rd. Bedford, VA 24523 or the Staunton River High School to the Mitchell Simmons Scholarship Memorial Fund 1095 Golden Eagle Dr. Moneta, VA 24121.
