Moneta man dies while working at project

A Moneta man died last Wednesday as the result of a fall off of scaffolding while working at the Downtown Moneta project off Va. 122, according to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

Donald Lee Patrick, 51, died as a result of falling from the scaffolding while working as an employee of Riverview Plumbing at the project, according to Major Ricky Gardner of the BCSO. Gardner said Patrick, who was on his first day at the job , had been working alone when he fell and was discovered by a co-worker. Gardner said Patrick died en route to the hospital.

Investigators with the sheriff's office responded to the scene. The incident occureed about 8:10 a.m. Patrick was apparently caulking pipes when he fell, according to the report.

The incident is being investigated by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, according to Jennifer Wester, director of cooperative programs with the department. She said the department will investigate to make sure safety standards were followed. She said the investigation results will be reviewed by senior staff and attorneys, once it's complete.

She said the department won't comment on the incident until the investigation is finished. By statute the department is required to complete investigations within six months.
