More space for Floors and More

Business moves to new location

By John Barnhart

Floors and More moved from its original West Main Street location to the 6C’s Shopping Center this past summer. The move has provided more space and better customer parking for the business of Bob and Jann Sloper.

The showroom is more than double the size of what it had. One side of the showroom, a space the same size as the Main Street store, is dedicated to samples of the flooring the business has to offer, and it also now has expanded flooring lines.
The other side allowed Jann to add more to the More part of the business’s name by opening a gift and home decor shop.
It’s the nature of the flooring business that makes the gift shop attractive. People buying flooring don’t typically walk out with the product. The gift and home decor shop provides offerings they may be interested in and purchase to take home right away. Or, customers may visit the gift shop and also end up checking out the flooring. Jann believes that the two will complement each other, allowing them to offer more to their customers.
Jann said that their gift shop is the only business in town that carries Virginia Diner Peanuts. Along with cans of the salted Virginia peanuts, she has chocolate covered peanut brittle and burlap bags of peanuts roasted and salted in the shell. But, she said she can order other varieties.
“I can get anything anybody wants,” she said.
She also has candles, wreaths, quality party ware, braided throw rugs, Gooseberry Patch cookbooks and unique gifts, “gifts for somebody who has everything if you don’t know what to get them,” Jann said.
She’s going to expand, offering garden accessories such as benches and statuary — “unique things, not the normal,” Jann said.
The Slopers gave their new display room a major face lift with new flooring. This was easy for them as they are a flooring retailer. They knew what to put in because had they already have their own installers to serve their customers.
When you stop in, you are sure to hear barking in the back. That’s Riley and Remington, the Dachshunds, and Max, the Border Collie, giving you a piece of their mind. The two Dachshunds tend to start the canine chorus and Max joins in.
“Anybody who knows us, knows our dogs come to work with us,” Jann said. “They like to come to work. They don’t like to stay home.”
Floors and More is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturdays until Christmas.
