Up next: JF at Rustburg

-A A +A

Cavs need playoff momentum

By Mike Forster

Some might view JF's Friday night tilt at Rustburg as a "get well game."

The question is: For whom?

On the one hand, Jefferson Forest would like nothing better than to pick up a win after suffering a three-game losing streak, which included huge losses to Amherst County (62-14) and Heritage (56-12).  After opening the season with a mark of 4-0, the Cavs  will limp into Rustburg's Hades Field sporting an overall record of 5-4 (1-4, Seminole).

On the other hand, Rustburg is sporting a five-game losing streak.  The Red Devils have been pounded in their three latest games, by Amherst (44-20), Heritage (42-14) and Brookville (42-7).

The Devils also raced out to a 4-0 record before losing each of their subsequent Seminole dates, to drop to 4-5.

Do the Rusties still have a chance at a playoff berth?  No.

Would they still like to knock off JF?  Sure.  That would be a nice feather in the Red Devil collective cap.  It would also provide a ton of momentum to a team that only carries seven seniors on its roster.

Here's what you can count on in this game, in our opinion.

1.  The scoreboard keeper will be a busy hombre.  The Red Devils put up points by the bucketful.  They also tend to give them up in large quantities.

2.  Look for a great battle in the trenches.  Both teams have tremendously talented lines that have a lot of heft.

3.  The Randall Jones show.  The Rustburg quarterback is the heir apparent to Heritage's JeVontae Parrish as the most dynamic quarterback in the Seminole.  The Cavs better get used to stopping this guy because they're sure to see him again next year.  This year, Jones has thrown and run for a total of 26 touchdowns.  That's about three per game.

4.  A lot of different looks from Jeff Forest.  The Cavs started the season running the pistol (shotgun with one halfback).  Since then, they've included two- and three-back sets, as well as their large-body backfield in close-yardage situations.  Be prepared to see anything, in other words.

This could shape up to be as good a game as was the JF-Liberty tilt last month.  It depends  on who shows up.
