We recently saw a major milestone in our engagement in Iraq as the last combat troops left the theater on August 19. The United States will keep a troop presence in the country to assist in training of Iraqi security forces, protect American personnel, and assist with counterterrorism efforts. Our military presence when I took office was approximately 144,000 troops, and approximately 94,000 of those are already home or on their way.
