A former professor at Radford University Shifflett, has written four books about her experiences growing up in Appalachia. Her newest and fourth book is On the Way to Toe Town: Learning, Curiosity, Rebellion, and Play in Traditional Appalachian Childhood, Shifflett dwells on the informal education of Appalachian children - how they learned in the family, how adults responded to their curious questions, and how they rebelled. Shifflett includes a description of games and toys handed down over the generations. As usual her work is interspersed with personal stories and reflections on her own childhood.
