This cicada waited 17-years to emerge, so you'd think it'd have better things to do than hang around a post on Paul Hayes' deck. But, that's where Paul found this one, snapped a photo of it and sent it to us. It's our photo of the week. In Paul's words: The 17-year cicada photo was taken on my back deck with thick woods close by in the Body Camp area of Bedford County. It was mid-afternoon on May 12, and I was standing on my deck listening to the cicadas screaming in the woods. Some were flying around and landing on the deck, and occasionally landing on me. This one landed on a deck post and seemed to want to rest there. Don't know why nature gave them pink eyes, but the eyes fascinate me so I wanted to capture that in a photo, and ran in and got my camera to take some close-ups. Paul used his Kodak Easyshare Z730, choosing to use the "close-up" option to take the picture from about 6 inches above the cicada.
