It’s interesting and ironic that we celebrate the anniversaries of both the Battle of Gettysburg and Independence Day over the same few days on the calendar.
On the Fourth, last week, we marked yet another anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, who had penned the phrase “all men are created equal.”
Yet, when he wrote those words, and even when he was president, Jefferson owned slaves, human beings he never set free at any time before his death in 1826.
