A man shot Sunday in Hardy has been charged with malicious wounding.

On Monday, Frederick Hancock was arrested and charged with the malicious wounding of his girlfriend, Jamie Klimaitis, and is being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Bedford on no bond.

On Sunday July 26,  at 4 p.m., the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Roanoke Memorial Hospital reporting that they were treating a gunshot victim. The caller advised that the shooting had occurred at 2527 Bandy Mill Road, Hardy in Bedford County.

According to the BCSO, deputies responded to the hospital and the Bandy Mill Road address and spoke with Klimaitis, 22. The report stated she had multiple bruises to her face and a swollen eye.

According to the sheriff’s office, she stated Hancock, 33, had assaulted her sometime during the night.

As for Hancock being shot, Klimaitis, according to the sheriff’s office, told deputies that she was asleep and was awakened by Hancock’s cries for help. She said he had shot himself in the shoulder.

Klimaitis reportedly called Hancock’s mother, who lives at 2529 Bandy Mill Road, who then transported him to the hospital.

Both Hancock and Klimatitis live at the 2527 address.

Major Ricky Gardner of the BCSO said the shooting is still under investigation.
