Six District 2 residents hope to be appointed to fill the vacant Bedford County School Board seat left in that district when Dave Vaden resigned last month.
The school board is scheduled to meet tonight, Wednesday, to interview the applicants, the second time this year they have had to go through this process. Earlier this year the board appointed Dr. John Hicks to fill the seat left vacant when Brad Whorley resigned from the board.
The board will interview the candidates in open session and will then go into closed session to discuss who they would like to appoint. The vote on the appointment will then be made in open session.
The six candidates who have applied are: Charlotte Maxey, Jennifer Merritt, Herman Swiers, Jason Johnson, Kelly Overstreet and Barry Tosh.
Vaden announced his resignation in May, citing illness and health issues within his immediate family, financial considerations and business opportunities that caused his family to relocate. He was serving as the board chairman at the time of his resignation.
The new board member for District 2 will be the fifth new member to join the school board this year. In addition to the appointment of Dr. Hicks in District 3, three board members joined following last November’s election: Richard Downey in District 1, Kelly Harmony in District 6 and Kevin Willis in District 7. They join District 4 board member Gary Hostutler (board chairman), District 5 board member Julie Bennington and Bedford City board member Mickey VanDerwerker.
The two board members appointed by the school board will serve until special elections are held this November to fill those seats.
