Some lucky student may win this car

Vickey Duncan and Melissa Merritt, leaders with the Liberty High School PTSA, were at the school Friday showing off a car that one student might just drive home later this year.

The catch? Only students who attend this year’s After-Prom party at the school will have a chance to qualify to win.
The car is being made available through the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition and First Team Auto Mall. Students selected from throughout the area will attend an After Prom Grand Finale Event in June and one student from LHS will be among the finalists for the car, according to Duncan.
The After-Prom event at the school is an alcohol and drug free event and serves as an alternative event for the students to attend following this year’s prom, scheduled for May 14. The prom will be held at the Elks Home and the LHS After Prom event will be held at the school’s gym from midnight to 4 a.m.
“We’re just trying to keep our kids safe and give them a fun experience,” Duncan said.
The LHS PTSA puts on the school’s After-Prom event. The PTSA has asked for parents to donate $10 to help pay for the event. Students attending will also have a $10 entry fee. Duncan said about 125 students attended last year’s event.
Included in this year’s activities will be a Human Bowling Alley, Bouncing Boxing Ring, Henna Tattoos, a mechanical bull, casino games and an obstacle course. Prizes will be given out every 15 minutes and there will be plenty of food, courtesy of Brooks Foods, Duncan said.
She added that parents are notified when their child leaves the After-Prom event, unless they choose not to be called. “We want them to get home safe,” she said.
Cost of the entertainment for the LHS event is $3,500 and Duncan said it’s all for a good cause.
And, of course, there is the chance that some LHS student may win the car in June.
Eight names will be drawn from LHS with four qualifiers and four alternates. In addition to a chance to win the car, the RAYSAC event in June will also have many other prizes for those who attend. That event will be held at Valley View Mall.
