At 11:57 p.m. Tuesday night the Moneta Fire Department was dispatched to the area of White House Road and Ayers Road for a possible fire in the woods, as reported by a passerby.
Moneta Command 8 and Medic 14-8 (Bedford County Fire and Rescue career-staffed ambulance out of Moneta FD station 1) arrived in the area and began a search.
At 12:07 a.m. Command 8 located a large residential structure on fire down a 1/2 mile long gravel driveway that was fully involved and requested a structure fire assignment and a tanker task force. A check of the immediate area revealed no vehicles so it was presumed that the residence was unoccupied; this was later confirmed by relatives of the owner.
An interior search was not feasible due to the amount of fire present. Once apparatus arrived an exterior attack was initiated along with a drafting operation from two portable tanks for water supply. The fire was declared under control at 1:05 a.m. and extensive mop up began. Units remained on the scene until about 4 a.m.
In addition to Moneta, units from the Saunders, Bedford, Huddleston and Stewartsville-Chamblissburg fire departments responded, as well as additional medical personnel from Bedford County Fire & Rescue.
The 1900 s.f. structure was built in 2008 and valued at just under $300,000. The home and its contents were a total loss. The Bedford County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
