Cavs open season on the road; Liberty, River on bye week

By Mike Forster

While football fields across the Commonwealth will resonate with the grunts and roars of prep football, the gridirons of Bedford shall lay silent.

At least this weekend.

Jefferson Forest will be the sole county team in action Friday night, as both Liberty and Staunton River sit out their bye weeks.

Since JF is on the road, that means that there will be no football in the County.  The Cavs take a long road trip to South Boston, opening their season against AAA-level Halifax County.

Additionally, Staunton River will head to Salem on Thursday evening.  There, they'll face a perennial powerhouse that has qualified for the playoffs the past nine seasons, winning the State title twice.

Playing the Spartans should be a big test for the Eagles, who weren't tested much in their opening scrimmage last Friday afternoon.  At the Eagles' Nest, River bumped heads with lightly-regarded Waynesboro.

On the one hand, the Eagles looked good, particularly on some long break-aways by quarterback Deshawn Martin and tailback Chris Tyree.  The River defense yielded little to the Little Generals.

On the other hand, penalties for holding and illegal procedure seemed the order of the day, spoiling some nice Eagle drives.

Next Friday, River heads to Forest, while Liberty visits Blacksburg.  Patience!
