We present our picks for the first week of the season. Given the newness of it all, we have little in the way of observation on which to base our picks.
Therefore, we employ a scientific methodology, including coins, darts and tea leaves to deduce our picks.
So, here we go:
Northside 21 vs. Jeff Forest 17
Sorry. You don’t pick against the defending state champs. This one could come down to the wire.
Last year, Northside, 28-6.
Liberty 28 vs. Broadway 13
Last year, the Minutemen fell asleep at the switch in the first half. Their comeback against the Gobblers gave a hot start to the season.
No such drama this time.
Last year, Liberty, 28-20.
Cave Spring 28 vs. Staunton River 19
Look for the Knights to make a nice run in the postseason. Eagles need a moral victory in this one, though they’re certainly going for more.
Last year, Cave Spring, 26-0.
Brookville 31 @ Martinsville 14
Good chance for the Bees to state their intentions for the rest of the season.
Last year, Brookville, 27-14.
Franklin County 26 vs. E.C. Glass 18
FrankCo flexes some Div. 5 muscle on its former Hilltopper peers.
Last year, Franklin County, 28-11.
Heritage 20 vs. Magna Vista 14
Pioneers were stunned last year by the Magnums. This year, they’ll be ready for ‘em.
Last year, Magna Vista, 35-0.
William Byrd 16 @ Rustburg 13
Byrd has too much depth and too much experience for an improving Rusty crew.
Last year, Byrd, 33-14.
Alleghany 28 vs. Covington 6
Mounties get off to a big start against in-county rival. Won’t be able to match last season’s thrashing, though.
Last year, Alleghany, 50-0.
Lord Bot 21 vs. James River 20
Good opening game for the Cavs. Don’t be fooled, though. This James River crew is a decent one.
Last year, LB, 21-6.
