  • 18 year old in custody following shooting, manhunt

    A shooting incident in the Thaxton area has ended with an 18-yearold in custody, without incident, according to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

    No citizens or law enforcement officers were injured during this event. One report stated the suspect had suffered a minor injury.

    The manhunt led to some roads being closed and schools going on lockdown in the Wheatland Road area of the county.

    The Sheriff's Office will release more information later this afternoon.

  • Fire destroys South Street home in Bedford

    Bedford Fire Department units responded to 511 South Street for multiple reports of an explosion and a house on fire early this morning.

    The first engine arrived at 12:29 a.m. to find heavy fire showing from a two-story wood frame private dwelling. Two occupants were reported missing initially.

    After a primary and secondary search proved negative both of those occupants were located at a nearby house. Seven occupants in all were displaced; six adults and one child.

  • One fatality in mobile home fire

    The Bedford Fire Department has stated through its Twitter account there was one fatality in a fire this morning on Saber Court, located off of Blackwater Road in Forest.

    The Bedford Fire Department was assisting the Forest Fire Department in responding to the call. According to the note posted on Twitter, it was a mobile home fire.

    According to Lt. Ryan Burnette of the Forest Volunteer Fire Department the call for the fire came in about 4:45 a.m. Burnette said the mobile home was fully involved in the fire when firefighters arrived.

    On August 7, Bedford County Sheriff’s deputies took a missing person’s report on Katherine Lynn Taylor, 44.

    She is a white female, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5’7”and 110 lbs. She has a unicorn tattoo on her right shoulder and a butterfly tattoo on her right leg.

  • Bedford man arrested for felony hit and run in fatal accident that killed bicyclist

    A Bedford man has been charged with felony hit and run in connection with an accident that killed a bicyclist Friday evening on Va. 122

    Michael Wayne Jenkins, 26, of Bedford, was arrested early Monday morning at his residence on Snowberry Hill. Jenkins is being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail with no bond.

    Drivers encouraged to monitor weather forecasts and plan ahead

    SALEM– The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Salem District is gearing up again to respond to anticipated winter weather in western Virginia.  VDOT has prepared equipment and alerted employees and contractors to be ready to mobilize.

    SALEM– Warm temperatures and the efforts of snow plow drivers have improved road conditions throughout western Virginia. Most primary routes (those numbered 1-599) and all interstates (I-77, I-81 and I-581) are in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots.
