  • Local enthusiasts get a look at Plan 9

        A science fiction film shot primarily in Bedford, got at good response from the 1,300 people who attended MystiCon, a sci-fi convention held in Roanoke over the weekend. A three-minute scene from the feature-length motion picture was named the MystiCon Fan Favorite Film.

        From the time he was a young man, Joe Collins has always loved art, with an interest in three-dimensional art forms.

        “They were so expensive I thought, ‘I can’t afford them, so I’ll make them,’” Collins said.
        So, he became a sculptor.
        “I started out carving wood 35 years ago,” he said.

  • GI Jive features music from World War II

        Music played a big part of the culture in the 1940s with its patriotic and sentimental themes as World War II raged around the world.

        On Saturday, Feb. 9, after a four-year hiatus, area residents will get a chance to relive those times as the National D-Day Memorial brings back the GI Jive 1940s dance. The event will be held, this year, at the Elks National Home.
        Karen Nichols and her Quartet will bring the sounds of the times to the stage.

        Local folks will have another chance to be in the movies this weekend.

        John Johnson, director for Plan 9, will be coming to Bedford this weekend for what he calls “pick-up shoots.” He described these as “random little shots that get put in the movie.”

  • 'Finding Faith' set for Jan. release

    The feature-length movie Finding Faith will soon be ready to go.

        The last bits of filming were completed this month.
        The movie is about a young teen who is kidnapped by a sexual predator she met on line. The project, sponsored by the Safe Surfin’ Foundation, is aimed at educating youth and parents about the dangers that lurk on the Web.

  • Variety of venues provide access to the arts

        Over the past six months, people who have come to the Bedford County Administration Building on West Main Street will have noticed that the once bare walls of the three story complex are now covered with art. 
         The art is part of a two-year showcase of local artists titled “The Art and Artisans of Bedford County.”  This exhibition, which changes quarterly, features work of nearly 20 artists and craft artisans at a time. 

  • Local man makes feature-length film

        Red Cloud Productions, based in Forest, has released its first full length movie, called The Potential Inside. The movie was made entirely in Bedford County.

        “I’m the producer, director and one of the key actors in the film,” commented Scotty Curlee, who founded the company.
