  • William M. Benton, Sr., 96, Big Island Edith S. Benton, 97, Big Island

        William McKnight “Bill” Benton, Sr., 96, and Edith Sligh Benton, 97, of Big Island died together at their residence Saturday, June 30, 2012. They were married 71 loving years.
        Bill was born in the Panama Canal Zone, March 10, 1916; a son of the late Henry and Edna Benton. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Benton Burger, and brothers, Edward Benton and Henry Benton, II. He was survived by a brother, Thomas Benton.

  • Lillie R. Abbott, 85, Campbell County

        Lillie “Louise” Reid Abbott, 85, of Campbell County, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012.  Born Sept. 18, 1926 in Naugatuek, Mingo County, WV; she is a daughter of George Washington Reid and Beulah Thompson Reid. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Edward Abbott: two brothers; Charles Reid and Robert Reid.

  • Rufus D. Orange, Sr., 64, Bedford

        Rufus Dwight Orange, Sr., 64, of Bedford, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at his residence.  He was born Feb. 16, 1948 in Bedford County a son of Irene Overstreet Orange and Rufus Cosby Orange.
        Rufus was a U.S. Army veteran.  He loved hunting, fishing and being around people.

  • Maria H. Mitchell, 75, Bedford

        Maria Hayden Mitchell, 75, of Bedford (Bunker Hill Community), went home to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 9, 2012. She passed away peacefully at her home. Mrs. Mitchell was born on Nov. 22, 1936 in Bedford County and was a daughter of the late Mack Hilber and Rebecca Arrington Hilber.

  • Mary P. Sowards, 78, Bedford

        Mary Price Sowards, 78, of Bedford, died Friday, June 22, 2012.  She was  born in Bland County on June 17, 1934 a daughter of the late Arthur W. Price and Minnie Miller Price. 
        She was retired from Rubatex.
        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

  • Virginia C. Layne, 62, Lynchburg

        Virginia Mae Ceary Layne, 62, of Lynchburg, formerly of Bedford, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 as the result of an automobile accident.  She was the wife of Robert D. Layne.  Virginia was born on Nov. 4, 1949 in Vinton a daughter of the late Ernestine Wilson Ceary and the late William Paul Ceary.

  • Elizabeth G. Holland, 90, Bedford

        Elizabeth “Betty” Gray Holland, 90, of Bedford, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 in Lynchburg Health & Rehab. She was born Aug. 31, 1921 in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Elizabeth Goodwin Slough Gray and Charles Leon Gray.
        Betty was a member of Bedford Christian Church. She was also a member of the Lynchburg Elk’s Club #321 and the Bedford Ruritan Club. Betty retired from Leggett of Bedford after many years of service.

  • Stuart L. Fielder, 54, Bedford

        Stuart Lynn Fielder, 54 of Bedford, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012 at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Friday, Jan. 31, 1958 in Bedford County, a son of Melvin Fielder and Australia Orange Fielder of Bedford.

  • Martha N. Burnley, 64, Forest

        Martha Neal Burnley, 64, of Forest, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born on Oct. 7, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Annie Neal.

  • Christopher M. Abbott, 40, Bedford

        Christopher Michael “Chris” Abbott, 40 of Bedford, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born on Tuesday, April 4, 1972 in Bedford, a son of Nelson Ray Abbott and friend, Vickie Wimmer of Troutville and Jeanette Fitzgerald Overstreet of Thaxton. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Lori Renee Abbott.
