  • Lester J. Stanley, Sr., MD

        On Nov. 25, 2009, Lester J. Stanley, Sr., beloved husband of the late Olive A. Stanley (nee Fraser), devoted father of Lester J. Stanley Jr., and his wife Mary and Lewis F. Stanley and his wife Holly B. Loving, grandfather of Jill, Lisa, Tracy, Kara and Kelsey. Mr. Stanley is a veteran of World War II and an active member of the Shriners.

        Funeral services were held at the family owned Leonard J. Ruck, Inc. Funeral Home, 5305 Harford Road (at Echodale) Maryland on Monday at 10 a.m. Interment Gardens of Faith Cemetery.

  • Evelyn Custer, 95, Bedford

        Evelyn Custer, 95, of Bedford, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in Oakwood Manor Nursing Home.  Born July 8, 1914, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Henrietta Dowdy Custer and Harden Leftwich Custer. 

        Evelyn was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church and a retiree of Bedford Memorial Hospital.

        She is survived by a brother, Wilson Otey Custer of Bedford and numerous nieces and nephews.

  • Edward R. Pardue, 66, Bedford

        Edward “Eddie” Raymond Pardue, 66, of Bedford, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at his residence.  Born April 3, 1943, in Bluefield, a son of Kathryn Vernon Pardue of Bluefield, and the late Edward Raleigh Pardue. 

        Eddie was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church and a 19-year member of the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge #402, Columbia, SC.  He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran having served during the Vietnam War.

  • Terry E. Roach, 48, Huddleston

        Terry Edward Roach, 48 of  Huddleston passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.  He was born on Friday, Sept. 29, 1961, in Bedford Co., a son of Nora Christine Barbour Roach of Huddleston, who survives and the late Billy Ramsey Roach.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Danny Roach.      He was a self employed logger.

  • Effie D. Holdren, 69, Bedford

        Effie Virginia Dooley Holdren, 69, of Bedford died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, in Lynchburg General Hospital.  She was born in Bedford County on Sept. 26, 1940, a daughter of the late, Irvin John Dooley and Clara Bell Gibson Dooley. 

        She was a member of Sedalia Baptist Church. 

        In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband, Johnny Griffin Holdren and a sister, Martha Rae Dooley Orange. 

  • Jeremy Persinger, 38, Falls Church

        Jeremy Persinger, 38 of  Falls Church and formerly of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2009. He was born on Monday, May 31, 1971, in Richmond, a son of Allen F. Persinger

    and Diana F. Persinger of Bedford, who survive.  

        In addition to his father and mother, he is survived by his sister, Rebecca Lynn Persinger of Maple Falls, WA. 

  • Richard S. ‘Dick’ Skelley, 60, Roanoke

        Richard Saunders (Dick) Skelley, 60, of Roanoke, died on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, the result of a seizure. He graduated from Cave Spring High School and attended Augusta Military Academy after which he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, serving in the Vietnam War. Upon return, he worked in home construction. For the last several years, he was employed by Virginia Western Community College in maintenance.

  • Paul Anderson, 63, Roanoke

        Paul Anderson, 63, of Roanoke, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009.

        He was employed by Goodwill Industries in Roanoke, VA.

        He is survived by his mother, Gaynelle Scott; two sons, Kevin Leftwich and Byron Leftwich; one daughter, Barbara Sherman; one sister, Claudia A. Steptoe, one brother, Claude Anderson, Jr., and a host of other relatives and friends. 

  • Celia W. Eunson, Rural Retreat

        Celia Wood Eunson of Rural Retreat, died Sunday evening Nov. 22, 2009, at her home surrounded by family members.

        She was born in Opps, PA on March 30, 1919, to the late Daniel and Margaret Wood. She moved to Salem from Schenectady, NY, where she was active in the Salem Presbyterian Church and the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed gardening and sewing for her family.

        Celia was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eunson.

  • James B. Goodman, 94, Forest

        James “Jim” Benjamin Goodman, 94 of Forest, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Bedford County on Saturday, June 26, 1915, son of the late Erasmus Keldon Goodman and Goldie Hudson Goodman.
