  • Fletcher Tucker, 98, Evington

        Fletcher Tucker, 98, of  Evington, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009. He was born on the Dutch Hill Tucker Farm at Orrix, now Evington on Feb. 14, 1911, in Bedford County, a son of the late Fitzhugh Lee Tucker and Mildred Flora Roberts. 

        He was also preceded in death by his wife of forty eight years, Ruby Wildman Tucker, his second wife, Faye Murphy Francis Tucker, two brothers, William Saunders Tucker and Robert Lee Tucker, and a sister, Callie Susan Tucker Womack. 

  • Mary L. Oakes, Manasquan, NJ

        Mary Jane Layton Oakes of Manasquan, New Jersey and Moneta, passed away on Aug. 4, 2009, after a long struggle against cancer.  She is survived by Frank M.

  • Homer L. Simmons, Jr., 64, Bedford

        With his work completed here on earth, Homer Lewis Simmons, Jr. of Bedford County was called home by the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009. Born on April 11, 1945, Homer was 64 years old and was preceded in death by his father, Homer Lewis Simmons, Sr.

        He was a charter member of Chamblissburg Baptist Church and retired from Norfolk Southern’s East End Shops after 39 years of service.

  • Frances H. Neukirch, 86, Floyd

        Frances Alicia Hall Neukirch, 86, of Floyd, and Huddleston, died peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, in Floyd.  Mrs. Neukirch was born June 4, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, a daughter of the late George Hall and Alicia Cashen Hall.

        She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Fredrick Neukirch; a daughter Barbara Polverari; and a grandson Kevin Polverari.

  • Virginia “Ernie” Brown, 88, Bedford

        Virginia “Ernie” Brown, 88, of Bedford, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, in Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.  She was born in Huntington, WV, on Oct. 22, 1920, a daughter of the late George Washington Brown and Oakley Workman Brown. 

        Ernie was a member of Baptist Temple Church in Huntington, WV.  She was retired from International Nickel Company. 

  • Elizabeth O. Carter, 74, Roanoke

        Elizabeth (Liz) Virginia Overstreet Carter, 74, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 9, 1934, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Ishmeal and Nettie Overstreet.

        Liz is also preceded in death by two sons, Charles Dennis and Harry O. (J.R.) Carter Jr.; also three brothers, Floyd, Wayne and Russell.

  • Phyllis M. Galbreath, 75, Jeffersonville, IN

        A memorial service for Phyllis M. Galbreath, age 75, Jeffersonville, was held at 5 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at Scott Funeral Home’s Main Street Chapel.  She was cremated. She passed away silently at her home after many long illnesses, on Sunday, July 26, 2009. 

        She was a native of Virginia, and a retired nurse from Clark Memorial Hospital where she worked for over 30 years in nursing, medical records, and in the pharmacy.

  • Leona W. Zimmerman, 80, Vinton

        Leona Whorley Zimmerman, 80, of Vinton, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey L. and Zula Jones Whorley; two brothers, Lynn and Gerald Whorley; and the father of her children, J. Bryan Zimmerman.

        She was a member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church for 45 years.

  • Gloria Marvuglio Marcia, 80, Goodview

    Gloria Marvuglio Marcia, 80, of Goodview, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at her residence.  She was born in New York City on March 15, 1929, a daughter of the late Anthony Marvuglio and Theresa Perrilla Marvuglio. 

        She was a retired operator with Verizon.  Gloria was a communicant of Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta.
