  • Michael J. Hart, Jr., 71, Forest

        Michael Joseph Hart, Jr., 71, of Forest, VA, died June 29, 2009 in Lynchburg.  He was the son of the late Michael Joseph Hart and the late Lucille M. Burghoff.

        Born Nov. 25, 1937, in Meriden CT, Mr. Hart was a former resident of Leesburg, where he was a member of Leesburg United Methodist Church.  He and his wife moved to Forest, in 2001, and were members of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

  • Beatrice R. Murray, 75, Bedford

        Beatrice (Bea) Robinson Murray, 75, of Bedford, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, in Bedford  Memorial Hospital. She was born in Botetourt County on Sept. 16, 1933.

        Bea was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. 

        She was preceded in death by a son, Carl D. (C.D.) Hardy.

        James Vernon “Booten” “Red” Laughlin, 83, of Lynchburg died Friday, July 3, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Sallie Cyrus Laughlin.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a special uncle.

  • Mavis J. Luby, 92, Bedford

        Mavis Jordan Luby, 92, of Bedford, died, Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Ellisville, Mississippi, on May 9, 1917, a daughter of the late Oscar Maxwell Jordan and Sadie Beech Jordan.

        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Denson Luby, brothers, Burland Jordan, Lee Jordan, Herman Jordan, Hiram Jordan, and Calvin Jordan.

  • Henry “P.D.” E. Nance, 83, Bedford

        Henry “P.D.” Edward Nance, 83, of Bedford, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Bedford Memorial Hospital.  Born Jan. 8, 1926, in Bedford County a son of the late Henry Grady Nance and Mary Frances Hubbard Nance. 

        P.D. was a longtime member of Suck Spring Baptist Church.  He also served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.

  • Ralph T. Utz, 93, Big Island

        Ralph Talmage Utz, 93, of Big Island, died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born in Westminster, MD on Oct. 24, 1915 a son of the late Daniel Henry Utz and Ester May “Annie” Berwager Utz.

        In addition to his parents Ralph was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Louise Gray Utz; two brothers, John Utz and Carroll Utz; and one sister, Ethel Switzer.

  • Emma G. Bryant, 86, Forest

        Emma Goodman Bryant, 86, of Forest, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on June 25, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Her husband, Raymond W. Bryant, preceded her in death.

        Born May 2, 1923, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Erasmas Keldon Goodman and Goldie Hudson Goodman. Mrs. Bryant loved children and provided care for many children in her home over the years. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church for many years.

  • John W. Buck, 66, Bedford

        John Walter Buck, 66 of Bedford passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1942, in Owensboro, KY, a son of the late John Thomas Buck and Maxine Wilkey Buck.

        He was a retired baptist minister and was a member of Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church, Bedford.

  • Dimick D. Heller, 92, Bedford

        Dimick Delmar  “Jimmy, Ole Man” Heller, 92, of Bedford, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his children, Bebe, Danny, Judy, Ellen, Joe and Theresa.

        Dimick was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara; his infant son, Michael and his cherished granddaughter, Laura.
