  • James T. Johnson, Sr., Bedford

        James Thomas “Spike” Johnson, Sr., of Bedford sadly passed away on Jan. 28, 2009.  Born on Jan. 17, 1944, in Raleigh, NC.  James proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  He was a car enthusiast and had been employed for years as a mechanic until becoming disabled. 

        James was preceded in death by his parents, Carl V. Johnson, Sr. and Ethel E. Johnson, and a brother Carl V. Johnson, Jr. 

  • Billy M. Gills, 80, Bedford

        Billy Malcolm Gills, 80 of  Bedford passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at the Elks National Home.  He was born on Saturday, May 19, 1928, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Hubert Aubrey Gills and Mary Ruth Leftwich Gills.   

        He was a retired employee of Belding-Corticelli and was a member of Bedford Baptist Church.

        Surviving is his son, Charles Gills of Richmond; a brother, Watkins Leftwich Gills and wife, Doris of Bedford.

        Nancy Reid, 80 of Bedford, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.

  • Marjorie A. Scott, 61, Boston, MA

        The Rev. Marjorie Ann Scott of Boston, MA, age 61, died on Jan. 28, 2009, in a Nursing facility in Newton, MA.  Marjorie was born Dec. 1, 1947, in Bedford, to Harry William Scott and Ann Martin Scott, who preceded her in death.

        Marjorie was a graduate of Liberty High School, class of 1966, and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, class of 1970.  She also earned graduate degrees at Duke University and Andover Newton Theological Seminary.

  • Hazel T. Arrington, 87, Bedford

        Hazel Tomlinson Arrington, 87, of Bedford died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in Lynchburg General Hospital.  Born June 28, 1921, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Smith Tomlinson and Lola Esther Reynolds Tomlinson. 

        She was a dedicated member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where she belonged to the United Methodist Women and church choir.

  • Jennings O. Hurt, 84, Goodview

        J. Odell Hurt of Goodview, 84, when to be with his Savior on Jan. 21, 2009. He was  born on Sept. 6, 1924, to Henry Hartson Hurt and Mattie Lucy Holdren Hurt. He joins his wife of 62 years, Melva R. Hurt.

  • Carl R. Puuri, 76, Smith Mountain Lake

        Carl Richard Puuri, 76, of Smith Mountain Lake, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Born Jan. 2, 1933, in Houghton, Michigan, a son of the late Matt Puuri and Emma Porkka Puuri.

        Carl was a member of Bedford Lutheran Church and served in the United States Army.  He earned his Bachelor degree from Michigan Tech and his Master’s from Washington State University.  He was a retired Forester with the US Forest Service with over 25 years of service.  Carl also loved the outdoors and was an avid fan of all sports.

  • Albert J. Pileggi, Bedford

        On Jan. 25, 2009, Albert J. Pileggi of Bedford, left this earth to walk again.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty (of 45 years); his parents, sister and brothers.
