  • Lois F. Carter, 83, Bedford

        Lois Frances Carter, 83, of Bedford died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at her residence.  She was born in Bedford County on Feb. 16, 1925, a daughter of the late Oscar Wright Dooley and Pearl Trent Dooley. 

        In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Billy Carter, Sr.; her son, John Billy Carter, Jr.; her brothers, John Pershing Dooley and Charles Dooley. 

        She was a member of Cool Spring Pentecostal Holiness Church. 

  • Calvin C. Layne, 84, Lynch Station

        Calvin Clarence Layne, 84 of  Lynch Station passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.  He was born on Saturday, June 7, 1924, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Clarence Lee Layne and Easter Lawhorne Layne.

        He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries with fifty-six years of service and was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. 

  • Mary T. Orange, 83, Bedford

        Mary Virginia Thomas Orange, 83, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Campbell Rest Home.  Born in Bedford County on Feb. 1, 1925, a daughter of the late Julius Blackwell Thomas and Lena Ruth Franklin Thomas.

        Mary was a member of Peaks Presbyterian Church, and a retired employee of Bedford Weaving Mill. 

        In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John William Orange; two brothers, Edward Thomas and Aubrey Thomas; and two sisters, Mattie Cruce and Rose Buccos.

  • George M. St. Clair, 81, Bedford

    George Malcolm St. Clair, 81 of  Bedford passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at  Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on Friday, April 15, 1927, in Bedford Co., a son of the late George T. St. Clair and  Annie Karnes St. Clair. 

        He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Hamblin St. Clair and three brothers, John Buford, Howard and Roy St. Clair. 

  • Ruby N. Thomas, 79, Montvale

        Ruby Nora Thomas, 79, of Montvale, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at her home. Born in Bedford County on Jan. 29, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Julius Blackwell Thomas and Lena Ruth Franklin Thomas.

        Ruby was a dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Montvale for 70 years and she was a avid collector of clocks. In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by two brothers; Edward Thomas and Aubrey Thomas; and three sisters; Mattie Cruce, Rose Buccos and Mary Orange.

  • Helen M. Wood, Lynchburg

        Helen McManaway Wood died on Wedensday, Jan. 7, 2009, at The Carrington in Lynchburg from complications following a fall at her home in Bedford County in November.  She was born April 11, 1916, in view of the Peaks of Otter at her family’s farm near Thaxton, the ninth of eleven children of Walter Lee McManaway and Ellen Boaz Huddleston McManaway. 

  • Stephen G. Kmeco, 86, Arlington

        Stephen G. Kmeco passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

        He was preceded in death by his parents, Anistasia and Stephen Kmeco, a brother Michael and his wife Marie, and sister Amilie and husband Frank Flutter.

        He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mae Ballard Kmeco, sister-in-law Nancy Ballard Walsh and brother-in-law Davis Ballard and wife Meg and numerous nieces and nephews.

  • William L. Barlow, 55, Bedford

        William Lewis Barlow, affectionately known as “Rat”, age 55, of Bedford died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on Dec. 19, 1953, to the late Jet H. Barlow and Etta Ray Barlow. 

        In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepmother, Irene Barlow; sisters, Mary Barlow and Martha Ann Womack, and brothers, John and Thomas Barlow. 

  • Thomas L. Bennett, 21, Bedford

        Thomas  Lee “Drew” Bennett, 21 of  Bedford passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  He was born on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1987 in Bedford, a son of Lloyd Herman Bennett and Emily Crouch Bennett of Bedford. 

        He was also preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn “Cookie” Mason, a stepbrother Tony Johnson and sister-in-law, Ashley Johnson.
