  • William E. “Eddie” Chilton, Jr., 27, Thaxton

        William Edward “Eddie” Chilton, Jr. 27, of Thaxton, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 26, 2008.  He was born on Feb. 17, 1981 in Roanoke, a son of William Edward Chilton, Sr. and Pamela Overstreet Hinchey.

        He was a member of Faith Life Baptist Church in Montvale.

        He was preceded in death by his grandparents Lilly and Ernest Overstreet; a brother, Jermey Chilton; a nephew, Joshua Payne. 

  • William H. Dortch, 89, Bedford

        William Hume Dortch, the son of William Hume and Eileen O’Hara Dortch, died peacefully on Dec. 24, 2008. Born July 4, 1919 in Bedford, he graduated from Bedford High School in 1938, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball.  The 1935 football team was the undefeated district champion.   He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1943.  He was a member of the Corps of Cadets and the German Club.

  • James R. Whorley, Forest

        James R. Whorley of Forest, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, in a boating accident while duck hunting on Buggs Island Lake.  He was the husband of Peggy Clowdis Whorley for 21 years.

        Jim was born July 16, 1948, in Bedford County, a son of Eleanor and the late Ashby Lee Whorley, Sr. 

        He was a graduate of Liberty High School and Hampden-Sydney College.  He received his master’s degree in school administration from Lynchburg College.

  • Carolyn G. Adams, 86, Lynchburg

        Carolyn Lucille Gerdes Adams, 86, of Lynchburg, died at her home on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008.  She was the wife of Budd B. Adams for the past 55 years. 

        Carolyn was born on Oct. 13, 1922, the daughter of the late George Gerdes and Emma Schaede Gerdes, and her beloved twin brother was the late Charles R. Gerdes.  She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg.

  • David Wayne Brooks

        “Be kinder than necessary because everyone is fighting some kind of battle.”  David lived his life steadfastly and valiantly throughout all of the triumphs and pain until he saw the welcoming arms of his brother, Shane, and his grandfather, Papa Brooks.  Together they will be embraced by their Lord and Savior as his eternal light fills them with joy and peace.

  • Cecil C. Noell, Sr., Lynchburg

        Cecil Crestwood Noell, Sr., of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, in Lynchburg General Hospital.  Born Dec. 10, 1925, in Cifax, a son of the late William J. Noell and Velda E. Poindexter Noell.

  • Violet R. Merchant, Lynchburg

        Violet Edna Robinson Merchant of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008.    She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Robert Prescott “Peck” Merchant, U. S. Army, Ret.; a sister Hazel Smith of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

        Preceding her in death were her sisters: Mary Hester Long, Lola Price, and Leafie Scott, all of Blacksburg.

        Violet was born in Blacksburg on April 5, 1919, daughter of the late Demaris Buck Robinson and Jacob Lowry Robinson.

  • Robert E. Smith, 63, Big Island

        Robert Edward “Bobby” Smith, 63, of Big Island died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, in Lynchburg.  Born June 23, 1945, in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late Gussie Higgins Smith and Russell Edward Smith.

        In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by a brother Bobby Lee Smith and a sister Bertie Jane Smith.

  • Stephanie S. Montague, Goode

        “Whippoorwill, I wonder, where have you gone, your persistent call a startin’ around the stroke of dawn…”

        Stephanie Mary Shong Montague, artist, Master Gardener, and professional horsewoman, passed away on Dec. 14, 2008 at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, from complications of myelofibrosis, with her children by her side.

        She was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on Dec. 2, 1934, the eldest child of Robert Charles Shong and Armella Marie Korb Shong.

  • John M. Woods, 81, Chester

        John Melvin Woods, 81, of Chester, Virginia, died Friday Dec. 19, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Hutchinson Woods and his parents Charles Fenton and Mary Pritchard Woods.
