  • Helen C. Divers, 84, Montvale

        Helen Campbell Divers, 84 of  Montvale passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  She was born on Wednesday, June 4, 1924, in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Jesse C. Campbell and Dora Elizabeth English Campbell. 

        She was also preceded in death  her husband, Edgar Milton Divers, Sr, a son, Edgar M. Divers, Jr. and a daughter, Betty Lodge. 

        She was a member of Walnut Grove Union Church. 

  • Early L. Gilbert, 91, Huddleston

        Early Lyman Gilbert, 91 of Huddleston passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at his residence.  He was born on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 1917, in Lansdale, PA, a son of the late Early L. Gilbert, Sr. and Vera Price Gilbert. 

        He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, Edith Roberta “Bobbie” Wofford Gilbert. 

  • Wilma D. Rieley, 65, Thaxton

        Wilma Sue Dalton Rieley, 65 of  Thaxton passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at the home of her sister.  She was born on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1942, in Hillsville, a daughter of the late Raymond Dalton and Ethel Phillips Dalton. 

        She was also preceded in death by a son, John Allen Rieley, III. 

        She was a member of member Blue Ridge Church of the Brethren.

  • Doris J. Simpson, 88, Huddleston

        Doris Jean Simpson, 88 of  Huddleston passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at  Bedford Memorial Hospital.  She was born on Monday, Nov. 1, 1920, in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Russell S. Powell and Lillian Bess Powell. 

        She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Norman T. Sheppard and Edward Simpson and a grandson, Chuck Sheppard. 

        She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. 

        Surviving are her son, Charles E. and Mary P. Sheppard, Bedford. 

  • Frank E. Noell, 86, Greensboro

        Our beloved Frank Edward Noell, 86, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

        Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Forbis & Dick, N. Elm Street Chapel.

        Mr. Noell was born in Bedford County to the late Carey Alexander and Georgia Viola Brown Noell on May 25, 1922.

  • William C. Updike, 83, Bedford

        William Calvin Updike, 83 of  Bedford passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at  Bedford Memorial Hospital.  He was born on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1925, in Bedford Co., a son of the late Mack H. Updike, Sr. and Flora Davis Overstreet Updike.

  • Dan Wilhelm, 72, Smith Mtn. Lake

        Houseboat neighbors from Pier B at SMYC remember Dan Wilhelm, 72, who passed away Nov. 7, 2007.

        Dan was charming, witty, kind hearted, and loyal friend- always quick with a joke and a grin. He resided in Florida in recent years, but kept in touch with his friends from SML.

  • Bonnie D. Craig, 57, Bedford

    Bonnie Dale Craig, 57 of  Bedford passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born on Wednesday, June 6, 1951, in Bedford Co., a daughter of Clarence Warren Craig and Barbara Jean Gibbs Craig of Bedford.

        She was also preceded in death by by two brothers, Randy Eugene Craig and Ronald Warren Craig.

  • Virginia B. Witt, 84, Goode

    Virginia Burnette Witt, 84 of  Goode passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at a local nursing home.  She was born on Monday, June 2, 1924, in Bedford Co., a daughter of the late Raymond Buenette and the late Mary Folden Burnette.

        She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Webster Witt; a son, Roy David Witt; a brother, Frank (Buck) Burnette and a sister, Gertrude Whorley. 

        She was a retired employee of General Electric and was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
