• Floyd B. Porter, 77, Bedford

        Floyd Burks “Buck” Porter, 77, of Bedford, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in Catawba State Hospital. Born Jan. 18, 1931, in Bedford County, a son of the late Clarence Landis Porter and Mary Dooley Porter.

  • William B. Young, 58, Bedford

    William Brahan Young, 58, of Bedford, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, in Salem. Bill was born in Bedford on March 5, 1950, a son of the late Adolph Young and Josephine Lawless Young.

    Bill will surely be missed by many he touched throughout his life. He was always one who took time for the elderly and once said “If it weren’t for old people, we wouldn’t be here!” He loved the simple life and dreamed of having a log shanty in the mountains. He always saw the beauty in everything even the red bud tree.

  • Kenneth R. Witt, 56, Bedford

    Kenneth Ray Witt, 56, of Bedford, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford on July 26, 1952, a son of Carlton and Tillie Witt of Bedford.

    In addition to his parents, Kenny is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Witt Meador and husband Henry Meador; his granddaughters, Madison and Emma Meador; Mother of his Daughter, Sherry Lewis Witt; a sister, Patsy Stevens and husband, Wilson; two brothers, Reggie Witt and his wife, Wendy; John Witt and his wife, Penny; many nieces and nephews.

  • Nancy A. Shropshire, 56, Lynchburg

    Nancy Arthur Shropshire, 56, of Lynchburg, passed away on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Lynchburg General Hospital following a brief illness.

    She is survived by her husband of 39 years, George D. Shropshire, III.

    Born Dec. 27, 1951, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Nelson Arthur and the late Edith Kelley Arthur. Nancy was a member of Tree of Life Ministries and was formerly a school bus driver for Lynchburg City Schools for several years.

  • Donald L. Revere, 66, Hayes

    Donald Lee Revere, 66 of Hayes, VA passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at Retreat Hospital. He was born on Thursday, May 28, 1942, in Washington, DC, a son of the late Leftwich B. Revere and Gertrude "Gertie" Bowyer Revere.

    He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret "Marcy" Davenport, Willie "Bell" Davenport and Hilda "Sis" Thomas.

    He was a retired employee of the Central Intelligence Agency and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

  • Ronald C. Myers, 54, Gretna

    Ronald Coleman Myers, 54 of Gretna passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at his residence. He was born on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1953, in Patterson, NJ, a son of the Lucille A. Roach Brienze of Gretna and the late Archie Coleman Myers.

    In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Ronald Coleman Myers, Jr. of Gretna; two sisters, Peggy Marr of Gladys and Martha Myers of Harriman, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the graveside at the Blank Family Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vicky Harmon Pannel officiating.

  • Martha P. Gaines

    After a long illness, Martha Padgett Gaines, founder of Busy Bee Child Development Center, Inc., Lynchburg, entered her eternal rest on Thurs., Nov. 6, 2008, at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home, Bedford, with her family by her side.

    Born Apr. 8, 1927, in Amherst Co., she was the daughter of the late Henry William Padgett and the late Marion May Hudson Padgett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers and by two sisters.

  • Genevieve N. Butler, 82, Bedford

    Genevieve Nacelli Butler, 82, of Bedford and formerly of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008. She was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on Sept. 4, 1926, a daughter of the late, William Nacelli and Genevieve Skypek Nacelli.

    She was an avid sports fan, loving her UVA Cavaliers and the Boston Red Sox.

    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Andrew Butler, Jr.; a daughter, Susan Butler; a niece, Carol Nacelli Langfeldt.

  • Robert E. White, Sr., 68, Roanoke

    Robert Edwin White, Sr., 68, of Roanoke and formerly of Bedford died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

    He was a loyal member of the Vinton Moose Lodge #1121. Bob loved fishing and Jan’s dog, Kramer. He was also an enthusiastic NASCAR fan.

    He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne L. White.

    Bob is survived by one son, Robert E. White, Jr. and his girlfriend, Deborah Updike; his sister, Emma Chapman; his grandchildren, Brandon White, Sara White and Wesley White; and his special friend, Jan Hart.

  • Dorothy F. Stanley, 80, Moneta

    Dorothy Falls Stanley, 80, of Moneta, passed away on Monday Oct. 27, 2008. She was born in Springwood, on April 26, 1928.

    She was a member of Springwood Baptist Church and was baptized in Springwood. She moved to Roanoke upon her marriage to Jessie L. Stanley on Jan. 6, 1951, and became a member of Bonsack Baptist Church. After moving to Bedford County, she became a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.
